I think soulmates & lovers are two different things because I think soulmates can refer to a friend, too, not just your significant other.

It's mostly because I view lovers as objects, and soul mates as a living reflection.

For my own definition, I prefer to think of them as the same. But technically, a soulmate can be someone you will always be compatible with, til the end, so it could be a best friend for life. But a soulmate could also be THE ONE too.

I think it goes: the one is always your soulmate, but your soulmate is not always the one.

Also, throwing in the term "lover" is making this confusing. You used "lover" and "the one" as if they were synonymous, but they're not.

I think that a soulmate and the one could be two different people. I've had a best friend who was my soulmate. But I also think that they could be the same person, the one could also be your soulmate. It depends on what your definition of soulmate is. My personal definition of soulmate is someone who completes you in all aspects and fully understands you. Someone you share a very special connection with, ya know? But some ppl think differently...so... yeah

I think lovers are a pair you know aren't meant for each other because you have a feeling you're not the best thing for one another... yet you can be determined to love them. For me 'soulmates', has a far more naturally cohesive feeling. Hence its ties with the concept of best friends and even family, too.
