How do you start a conversation with a person you've never talked to before?

You could ask him to help you with a problem. C:

If you're going to tell me "but isn't it weird for a stranger talk to you if you two don't even know each other?" then game over for you.

i told him "hey nice shoes!" then i said "what's your name?" then he tells me, i tell him mine. then it just developed from there. compliments work better than walking up to him and saying "hey! nice to meet you. i'm blahblah."

that'll make him flee the room...
just ask him if you could borrow a pen or something.
you: "um, i forgot my pencil case at home, may i borrow ur stuff?"
him: "uhh... sure."
you: "thanks! you look like someone i know. what's your name? i might know you!!
make up something extremely cheesy + corny like that.
sometimes i know it's awkward suddenly talking to a person you've been around so long but said nothing. so you gotta make up some things ^_-
good luck!!!!

Be good at improvising.
I can give you some steps that will last you for like a minute or two, but you'll be on your own for the next... long time.
To break the ice I usually don't say hi how are you. Usually go 'sooooooooo...' or 'I'm doing fine, yeah'. Something silly.
Once I just said 'today's my birthday' (it wasn't) and the conversation just went perfectly from there.
Maybe it's just me, but I hate "hey" when you're trying to first talk to someone.
Practice on the internet or something (omegle?) you might meet someone cool after 30 disconnects.
Mind you, all the guys want your ASL so you know what's up.

Then rant on about something, ask him if he was in one of your classes last year.

Hahahaha.
Smile widely and just say "hi". That's probably the easiest way to start a conversation.

best way is to be confident and just introduce yourself. if you're happy, confident etc people will be more inclined to talk to you, lol. if you're shy they're gonna be like ... so.
for me, I was just like "Hello! I'm Jade, what's your name?" then they'd introduce themself and I'd ask them what subjects they're taking and then we'd talk about that... then if we're in the same class I'd keep interacting and asking how to do the work, comment on the teacher (XD) etc etc etc
if you talk to them all shy and that it'll probably be awkward, so try your best to be bubbly and confident. ofc you don't want to come on a total loonatic but try to make them feel at ease!
it's worked for me haha :D

Oh! I was just in this situation a few months ago.
Only, he wasn't in any of my classes.
One of my friends was pretty tight with him so I'd always hang around him to get to the unknown guy.
Well, my friend kinda forced me too.
Not sure if you have friends who know your guy but it sure helps espiecially if you're on the shy side.
He then asked me to prom

then just go on and have some regular small talk, then ask for his MSN and ask him out!
you could also ask him for his number instead of his MSN, whatever you like
just be funny and self confident, thats the key
