When I walk, I don't swing my arms like how you're "supposed" to. In fact, I actually have to voluntarily think about moving my arms, and eventually I get tired even faster.

It feels more natural to have them on my sides or in my pockets and just let my legs do their thing. But this is not "proper" walking? It's not like they're just hanging stiff either, but it's just not making those really huge arcs that you're "supposed" to be making.

Is there something special about swinging your arms? Does it allow for better blood circulation or decreased air resistance to allow faster mobility of sorts?

Same with running lol

We have to learn about this in theatre all the time.

Some people just have their "isms" everyone walks differently, nobody has the same walk what soever. Some people swing both arms very little. Some people swing one arm a lot, and the other one not at all. And then there are cases like me, where I walk on my toes and hold my arms to my chest when i walk, same with running.

Don't worry about it either way, its not going to hinder or harm you lol

I usually swing my left arm more than my right one.

...I thought this thread was going to be about posture TBH.

I read about a study on this and one of the facts to why we swing our arms is for balance. I don't remember the others haha But here's a link I found about this

i used to swing my arms a lot. i took big swings too. i didn't really notice until my friend pointed it out so now i don't do it anymore. i think it's supposed to help your legs when you walk.

actually, keeping your arms out from your body helps circulation. i experimented with this theory and to me it's fact. the veins on your hands are more visible when your arms are close to your body, but when i walk with my arms at a good distance from my body, you're not able to see any veins on my hands. it actually makes my hands look extremely feminine because it's very smooth looking rather than looking like i pump steroids. it's best to keep your arms further away from your body. you'll feel more energized plus it helps with your posture.

My posture's fine (cause it's cooler that way). Can't really see my veins either for some reason lol

But maybe it's just unique to some people? Cause I know a lot of people that walk with huge arm-swinging action and their veins are just all over the place.

At least you don't walk like a duck!

Sorry but I really can't stand that kind of walk. dry.gif

And it's better to not arm-swinging than huge arm-swinging...looks ridiculous in my opinion.

Me too! Arm swinging isn't natural to me at all, and I have to force it. Most of the time, I just stuff my hands in my pockets (but then that makes me look like a chicken because my elbows are always flapping in and out.)

its "suppose" to help for balancing. thats why when you walk your legs and arms alternate.
but it doesn't really matter if you swing your arms or not.. as long as you can walk..

on the other hand... i have a little pet peeve about people's feet not pointing parallel to each other, like their feet points outwards..

a lot of people swing an arm or two.
i guess it's a habit or something.
i don't do it everytime. i'll put my hands in my pocket or something.
I guess it's the norm to have your arm swinging around.
ps. i don't do it, cos i've hit several people
before, they were way to close and i touched you know..-.- by mistake.

I tried walking like that once, and honestly the whole arm swinging thing didn't work out.
It felt really awkward.
I also don't walk "properly" when it comes to my feet..
I walk as if I'm sliding on the pavement =(

It makes me feel so uncomfortable to walk with my hands by my side. They are either in my pockets, or one in the pocket, and the other holding my cell phone, MP3 or the shoulder strap of my backpack.

I don't walk how we are "suppose to", too. I still remember my eighth grade teacher walking next to me down the hall one day and out of nowhere, she goes, "Tiffany! Walk properly!" Meh, whenever my dad says the same thing these days, my mom said that I walk just like how she did when she was younger haha My feet are dragging, and because the shoes I always wear is bigger than my foot (it's a guy's shoe), I drag it even more. I can't help that the throat of the shoe is bigger than my ankle!

2 style:
don't put hand in pocket and i start swinging naturally.
(it feels really weird when you start to realize is)

or pocket in hand.

Also depends if i am carry anything like a bag --> slanted bags + swinging doesn't mix.

I do swing my arms like crazy <--- that's what my father told me once.
It's only natural for me to swing arms since I do walk very fast usually. And if I'm in a hurry, I would walk even faster and swing my arms even more, which may look quite funny rolleyes.gif
