The story behind The One and Taeyeon’s relationship

The duet between SNSD’s Taeyeon and her vocal teacher and senior singer The One hit online music sites on November 17th.

The story behind their get-together is an interesting one, as The One used to be Taeyeon’s vocal teacher since her pre-debut days. He revealed, “Taeyeon had a unique voice ever since she was little, so she’s one of my favorite students. She’s always exceptional in everything she does and I knew 100% that she’d grow up into a great singer.”

The two previously came together in 2004, before SNSD’s debut, with the track, “You Bring Me Joy,” for his personal album release. Despite being a trainee, they promised one another that they would meet each other at the top.

The release of “Like A Star” caught the attention of many top stars, as it was produced by hitmaker Jo Young Su and a 50 member orchestra.

Representatives of The One stated, “We’re thankful for the interest. The song is a captivating combination, and we hope this duet track receives th econtinued love of the public. We’ll continue to release surprising duet tracks and create new trends.”

SNSD’s Taeyeon and The One’s “Like a Star” achieves an all-kill

Shortly after its release, Taeyeon (SNSD) and The One’s collaboration single, “Like a Star“, has achieved an all-kill!

According to “Like a Star”’s music publisher, the single grabbed first place on various music charts including Melon, Soribada, Bugs, and Dosirak for November 18th.

A representative stated, “I didn’t expect the single to achieve an all-kill. … I thank the blogs and music portal sites that gave the song first place, as well as good reviews.”

Meanwhile, the MV for “Like a Star” has been attracting much attention due to the reunion of actor Yoo Seung Ho and actress Park Eun Bin, who last worked together through MBC’s drama, ‘Queen Seondeok‘.

Taeyeon’s mentor, ‘The One,’ praises her talents

The One has been the vocal trainer and mentor for countless top name artists, but he revealed the name of his most unique student during an interview with Seoul NTN. The One believes that SNSD’s Taeyeon was his most exceptional student, and praised her highly throughout the interview.

He began, “I taught her before her debut with SNSD – from her second year in junior high until her first year in high school, which is about three years. What was little Taeyeon like? First of all, her outstanding vocal talent needs no mention, but she was just so different from others, the mere thought of it sometimes scares me.”

The One explained that other students her age came to him with dreams of ‘becoming a celebrity’, but for Taeyeon, she had a clearer goal than that: Taeyeon wanted to ‘be a singer and reach the top with her own talents.’ He explained, “Her thought process was entirely different. She was intelligent and clear. Taeyeon set up her own standards while learning how to sing and showed concise beliefs.”

She made such an impression on him that he gave her an opportunity to participate in his second album – the very first musical effort from the idol star. Together with The One, Taeyeon recorded a duet called “You Bring Me Joy“.

“I knew that she would make it big… I knew she would someday.. I had that belief inside of me, which is why I gave her the opportunity. I could have sung the duet with another more famous female vocal, but I wanted to acknowledge Taeyeon’s potential,” said The One.

The two met again seven years later for another duet off of his fourth album, “Like A Star.“ The song dominated the charts and was hailed as a beautiful work between a mentor and student.

“Winning #1 wasn’t important to me. She made me feel my worth as a teacher. In both the past or present, Taeyeon’s passion for music hasn’t changed one bit. I remember her as a child, her eyes sleepy with fatigue, going through a three-hour long recording and still telling me, ‘Teacher, I can do better! I’ll try better once again.’ She’s amazing.”

Despite the fact that she’s now the leader of one of the greatest girl groups, The One revealed that he wasn’t able to recognize her at first glance.

He laughed, “One day, I wondered what ‘SNSD’ was and randomly came across a child named Taeyeon while watching TV. I was so surprised, I gave her a call and found out that she made a formal debut as the lead singer of SNSD. I was so proud, I knew she could do it.”

Taeyeon also repaid his support through gratitude. She’d often invite him for a meal with her parents, and the two would discuss her new career as a singer.

When asked whether his student had changed now that she’s become a top star, The One shook his head. “If anything has changed, it’s that her tastes have become more clear. She was very clear with what she liked and disliked even when she was little. She’s a singer with a clear passion for music, not an idol that is swayed by this or that.”

The One also divulged his thoughts on his protege being an idol star. “She’s only an idol because she’s young. I fully believe she’s capable of more. She matches ballads that show off her vocals more, as opposed to dance songs. Watching her create a name for herself with solo tracks and working as a DJ makes me believe that her name will become even stronger in the future.”

He expressed the feeling of standing on stage with his student as a ‘happiness given by the heavens.‘

“To teach singing is a lot like running a marathon. Because I ran a bit further ahead, I learned ‘how to sing,’ which is what I passed down. I am not passing knowledge, but methods. Not teaching them on how to be a fish, but rather, how to fish.”

The One shares his thoughts on the TVXQ / JYJ situation

It is absolutely heartbreaking for a parent to watch their children fight and this is exactly how The One (Jung Soon Won) feels watching the recently separated TVXQ / JYJ.

[The One is a mentor to the boys and was most famous for being the vocalist of group Space A in the late 1990's.]

“I first met them when they came back to Korea,” said The One.

He continued, “I told them to not misunderstand each other even though they all want to go separate ways. We had a drink and that was that. But they suddenly got divided into two teams and other artists are talking about the boys, I felt so sad.”

The One wrote a message for JYJ and TVXQ on his personal website. A part of his message read “1+1=2, 1+1=3, 1+1+1+1…=1,” expressing his sincere hope for all five of them to stay together.

“Each of them has different standards but it’s disappointing to have opposite sides. What kind of problems would be there among the boys anyway? Sure, they can argue if they disagree with each other but I don’t think it’s a good thing to have someone else divide them and turn them into enemies. Why can’t we all just wait for them without saying anything?“

The One feels like a parent when it comes to five TVXQ members.

He had always watched all five of them perform together. “They were the brightest and happiest when there were five,” said The One as he reflected on the past but he doesn’t want to force or scold TVXQ; he loves TVXQ just like a teacher loves his student.

The One talks about the singers he trained on “Taxi”

Posted Image
Recently, ‘The One‘ revealed that he scolded Super Junior’s Leeteuk and Shindong the most while conducting vocal training for singers.

tvN’s “Taxi“aired a special episode called ‘The Singer Who Teaches Singers’. The One had taught an extensive list of singers, including TVXQ, Super Junior, and SNSD’s Taeyeon. But out of all his trainees, he revealed that he had scolded Leeteuk and Shindong the most.

The One explained, “Leeteuk had the habit of going to the bathroom whenever he had to practice. Shindong likes to joke around a lot, so he often fooled around and sang sad songs in a funny way. The two are really funny so I suggested that they sing a duet together“.

He also revealed his special relationship with Taeyeon and said, “I met Taeyeon when she was a second year student in middle school. I gave her a lesson once every week. Her concentration was remarkable and she had the look in her eyes which you normally couldn’t find from people her age. When I heard that she debuted as a SNSD member, I was really surprised“.

The special episode is set to air on March 17th.
