BIOGRAPHY
For featured artist for this week, we have legendary rock band Boo Hwal. They celebrated their 25th anniversary this year. Although many member changes have occurred in the past 2 decades, the band Boohwal has kept its solid position in the local pop music world. Boohwal made their debut in 1985 with the song Heeya. It was around that time period when the heavy-metal music genre in Korea started to grow. Many bands that pursue British heavy-metal music actively performed in the Jongro area located in central Seoul.

Among the heavy-metal bands were Boohwal who received the biggest attention. Since its opening, the Pagoda Theater in Jongro had it's largest audience when Boohwal held its concert there. The bands first vocalist was Kim Jong-seo. Lee Seung-cheol joined the band a year later in 1986. Since Lee joined the band, Boohwal began to establish a stronger foundation for their music style. Songs like Heeya and The Story of You and Rain sung by Lee Seung-cheol were sensationally popular.

After Lee Seung-cheol left the band, Kim Jae-ki joined Boohwal as a new singer. However, Kim Jae-ki died suddenly from a car accident at the young age of 26. Kim Jae-hee, the younger brother of Kim Jae-ki joined the band in 1994 and the song As I Love You More recorded a great hit. With the popularity of the song, 800 thousand copies of Boohwals 3rd album were sold. Kim Jae-hee stayed with Boohwal until the band released its 4th album in 1995.

After Kim Jae-hee left the band, Park Wan-kyu who had been actively performing on stages within the 8th U.S. military base in Korea joined the band. Park Wan-kyu gave a refreshing change to the bands music through the upbeat dance rock number Lonely Night. Parks cool and refreshing voice appealed to many pop music lovers enabling the band to enjoy its second heyday. Since then, the band rested for 2 years without releasing an album.

Kim Ki-yeon as the lead vocal and Chae Je-min as the drummer, Boohwal released its 6th album introducing a style of rock music that is unique to Korea. In 2002, the band met with Lee Seung-cheol once again. Never Ending Story, the title song of Boohwals 8th album featuring Lee Seung-cheol as the main vocalist, became one of their biggest hit. Despite depression in the record market, more than 370 thousand copies of the album were sold.

Just as the name of the band Boohwal means, the band was born again in the local pop music world with its 8th album. In 2005, the band celebrated its 20th anniversary.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary this year, first they released the special album Boohwal - Song Book : 25 Anniversary. The album consist their popular songs been covered by other singers such as SG Wannabe, Park Sang Min, Xing, and ST. Child. It was released early this year. The album become hot selling item and already out of stock.

This August 2009, they released the 12th album Part I - 25th Anniversary: Retrospect. This is just the first part of the anniversary album. The mini album have three new song and three old songs. The latest band lineup have been the longest so far since 2005. They consist of guitarist and leader Kim Tae Won, vocalist Jung Dong Ha, bassist Seo Jae Hyuk, drummer Chae Jer Min and keyboardist Eum Soo Han.

I was wowed by Jung Dong Ha - not how he looked (although, I must admit he is sooooo hot), but his husky voice and was amazed it was coming from someone lean and not 'worn'-looking (ahem...ahjusshi...). Thank you for starting this topic - I think they deserve more recognition. Great music and especially with a great new vocalist!

Can't believe it's taken this long for them to get their own thread. They are prob one of the most underrated bands on Soompi. I'm a sucker for ballads and also husky voices.

My fave songs are: Never Ending Story, Heeya, Love, The Fog and 생각이나

Kim Tae Won regrets his past addiction of drugs

Being part of Boohwal, one of the oldest Korean rock groups, guitarist Kim Tae Won revealed his true feelings about his past usage of drugs on SBS’ When It’s At Night.

On the recent episode, he stated, “Back then when I touched drugs, I was jailed at the Seodaemun prison. Almost as if it was a promise to my seniors, I started doing drugs. It was my foolish curiosity; I had lots of it and I regret that.”

However being caught doing drugs again in 1991, the MC’s asked, “If you regret it, why did you do it again?”

He answered, “After the formation of Boohwal in 1986, we met Lee Seung Chul. After the breakup two years later, he made a comeback with the song, ‘Final Concert’. I started to drift away from the people’s attention. At a young age, I was sulky, I couldn’t stand it because he was on TV all the time. It was originally my song; nobody gave it another look, but they went crazy when Lee Seung Chul sang it. To make it worse, that song was written while thinking of my wife, and I felt that her thoughts toward me was depressing. That sulkiness was the reason why I couldn’t end my addiction.

He also stated, “When I was high, I saw ghosts, aliens, and angels. There were even times when I saw things 3 seconds ahead. Instead of a reaction after something happened, my reaction was before an event happened. I would also hear a beeping sound for 24 hours… This is common for everyone who stopped doing drugs. You’re more into the addiction than your own life. I was so absorbed into it, I couldn’t find myself to regret it. I could only put an end to it after finding something that was more blissful. My father’s journal and my wife saved me because she came to see me at prison everyday.”

Looking at how serious drug addiction is, it’s good to see that he stopped before things got out of hand.

Boohwal’s Kim Tae Won diagnosed with stomach cancer

Many of you may not know of old school rock band Boohwal, but for those of you who followed them back in the day, it was unfortunately reported that leader Kim Tae Won (46) was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The leader of the rock band was documented on KBS 2TV’s ‘Happy Sunday – Qualifications of Men’, which aired on the 27th and told of how Kim Tae Won felt when he received the diagnosis.

“I felt…the word ‘cancer’ itself…was enough to end the world,” said Kim Tae Won in the preview segment. The preview clip also showed his family and the ‘Qualifications of Men’ staff shedding tears.

Kim Tae Won’s agency spoke to Star News and said, “Kim Tae Won tested for cancer in mid-January while shooting the show’s episode, ‘Man, and cancer’, and was diagnosed with stomach cancer.” They also added, “Kim Tae Won underwent surgery to remove the tumor on the 16th, and underwent another one on the 22nd. All of the tumors have been removed successfully, and so he is currently recovering.”

A staff member revealed, “Kim Tae Won attended all of recording sessions and scheduled concerts while keeping the diagnosis and surgery as a secret. He checked out of the hospital on the 26th. He is currently recovering.”

The full story of Kim Tae Won’s diagnosis and surgery will air via the ‘Qualifications of Men’ segment on March 6th. We hope he makes a speedy and healthy recovery.

Boohwal’s Kim Tae Won carries on with his concert just 11 days after surgery

Boohwal guitarist Kim Tae Won (46) will be carrying on with Boowhal’s concert tour despite it being right after his stomach cancer surgery.

The rock band leader and guitarist will be participating in Boohwal’s solo concert at Changwon KBS Hall twice on the March 5th at 4 PM and 7:30 PM. Boohwal has an around-the-country concert tour at the start of the year.

Associates of Boohwal’s company revealed to Star News on this day, “We are already down at Changwon with Kim Tae Won. Kim Tae Won will be standing on stage today as well to keep his promise to fans.”

This participation in the concert by Kim Tae Won is garnering attention in that it has only been 11 days since his stomach cancer surgeries had commenced.

Previously, Kim Tae Won had went through cancer health exams during KBS’s program ‘Qualification of Men’ in mid-January, and received the diagnosis of stomach cancer in its beginning stages from the hospital. On February 16th, he underwent his first surgery at Samsung Seoul Hospital, and his second surgery came six days later on the 22nd. Currently, all his cancer cells are proclaimed to be removed and he is in recovery.

Kim Tae Won had also previously showcased his determination with his participation in Boohwal’s concert in Junbook, Junju, on February 19th, just three days after his first surgery.

Kim Tae Won’s cancer diagnosis, as well as his surgery, will be revealed through the March 6th episode of ‘Qualification of Men’.

On the other hand, Kim Tae Won has touched the hearts of viewers on MBC’s audition program, ‘The Birth Of A Great Star’, aired on the night of March 5th, when two students he had mentored, Son Jin Young and Yang Jung Mo, had been eliminated from the competition and he had shown heartfelt sympathy and caring for them till the end.

Boohwal’s Kim Tae Won talks about his autistic son

Boo Hwal’s Kim Tae Won shared a very personal detail from life while appearing on MBC’s “Golden Fishery”.

During the “Knee Drop Guru” segment, Kim Tae Won expressed his sadness about his second son being autistic. He stated, “Two years after our son was born, my wife and I found out that he was disabled. It was really hard for me to continue my music activities during that time.”

He continued, “My wife’s wish is to live a day longer than our son. I still dream about having conversations with my son. He is 11 years old now but we never had a conversation together.” As Kim Tae Won revealed these painful truths about his family, he couldn’t stop the tears from forming, which caused many viewers’ hearts to ache.

Because of Kim Tae Won’s heartfelt confession on “Knee Drop Guru”, the viewer ratings went up 1.4%, defeating all other programs that were aired at that time slot.

[Review] “If I Were Now” by Boohwal

“If I Were Now“, released on March 29th, is one of Boohwal’s latest digital singles. Considered legends, Boohwal have been active since 1986, have spawned 12 albums, and are still standing strong as they continue to release one brilliant record after another.

Kim Tae Won (guitarist and leader) formed the band back in 1985 and has remained the brains and soul of Boohwal’s music while (many) former members have come and gone over the years. If you watch Korean variety shows, you’ll definitely recognize him.

The current line up – Kim Tae Won, Chae Je-Min, Seo Jae Hyuk, and Jeong Dong Ha – had stayed the same since 1997, until Jeong Dong Ha (the group’s 9th vocalist) entered the picture in 2005 as the new front man.

In three words, Boohwal’s music is: emotive, intense, and raw. I admire Kim Tae Won for his incredible set of songwriting and composition skills, because his span of work has always had a great sense of balance and the perfect amount of breathing room to enjoy, and “If I Were Now” is no different.

Briefly, this song features a calming piano line, a classic orchestration, and all those rock elements that we absolutely love. What carries this soft and meaningful song to the heights of perfection is a combination of two things: beautiful melodies (within the gorgeous verses and chorus) and astonishing vocals. Those two elements should always go hand in hand, but there are definitely occasions when a song will have a catchy melody with some ho-hum vocals, and consequently ends up lacking the force, energy, etc. it may have intended to utilize.

In Boohwal’s case, they will never need to worry about this problem because 1.) they’re veterans, and 2.) they have one of the most talented lead vocalists you’ll come across in Korean music.

Not only does Jeong Dong Ha (the maknae, if you will) have great technique, but he also possesses a very unique color to his voice. His style of singing is raspy and throaty at times, and has the type of quality that pulls directly at your heart strings. In fact, it could possibly bring tears to your eyes, depending on your susceptibility to moving pieces and the intensity in which Jeong Dong Ha and Boohwal perform with (don’t believe me? listen to “Thought“). That’s how defined Dong Ha’s vocal and emotional performance is, not to mention his range, so it’s no wonder why this band has stood the test of time in this industry. They are epic on all levels.

If you’re a fan, make sure to also check out Boohwal’s recent song, “Everyone Should Love“, from their Collaboration Project + 2 released on April 7th, featuring three of their former vocalists (Everyone Should Love).

Listen : If I Were Now

Kim Tae Won claims SISTAR’s Hyorin is “Korea’s Beyonce”

Posted Image
Boohwal’s Kim Tae Won showered SISTAR’s Hyorin with compliments after listening to her cover of the famous song, “Heeya“.

During a recent recording for KBS2TV’s ‘Immortal Song 2‘, Kim Tae Won made a special appearance as the second ‘legend’. On this day, idols competed by singing popular songs from Boohwal, a much-beloved rock group.

It was Hyorin who succeeded in stealing the spotlight by singing a rock version of “Heeya“. Her passionate performance and powerful vocals left the audience in awe. After watching her performance, Kim Tae Won praised the idol with: “She’s Korea’s Beyoncé. I’m proud that Korea has produced such a talent.”

MC Kim Gura added, “We need more talented female rock singers so that the rock genre can develop even further.”

Ever since i watched Rock Rock Rock (the drama is awesome) i've been searching for boohwal's songs, videos and info. The band is amazing, Kim Tae Won is funny and a great guitarrist (yes i'm also watching Qualifications of Man and loving the show). Every singer of boohwal is good but Jung Dong Ha is my favorite, love all his songs and versions, his voice is so powerful and full of emotions (no harm if he is goodlooking too)
My fave song is 'Reminiscense III', then 'Sonagi' and 'Assimilate'. i'm also love 'Thought' and 'Noeul' and 'Imagine' and 'Love', 'The Only Road' and many more (i have to stop myself from counting, kekke). Lately i can't get out of my head Don Ha's version of 'Sad Deer' and  his version of 'Posibility' is also catching.
ok. i must stop counting... still there's so many songs to discover and info to learn. boohwal is a whole new world to me. i admire KTW so much and hope Boohwal keeps rocking for a long time
also wish to go to korea and see them in concert!!
i'm afraid i'm a boohwal adicted:blush:

I became a fan of Boohwal because of Kim Tae Won's guitar playing and my favorite vocalist was
Park Wan Kyu. Now it's Jeong Dong Ha.. I am just sad that there are shows that easily translated or
subbed in English but none from Boohwal's, specially their interviews... can I please request from
somebody out there to do so??? thanks so much, fellow Boohwal fans..
