okay so weird question.....if you get a dog from the animal shelter do you get to name the dog? like because I look at the animal shelter search thing on the internet and stuff and usually it's like they already have names or something.

so if you get a dog from the shelter....do you get to name it or do you have to go with the name it already has...haha I'm getting a dog (as soon as the shelter has a poodle(cuz I was allergic to everything but a poodle when I was younger) they'll call me and I'll get him/her) so I'm kinda freaking out about everything. Because I've never had my own dog, usually it's like a family dog and my mom buys all the stuff for it but since I don't live my mom right now and I live with my dad....I have to take care of it all by myself (which is awesome!!) which means I have to buy all it's food and equipment, adoption fees and everything (my dad actually made me sign a contract and all that....not that he ever took care of the dogs we had back then....he gets mad at my brother and i for not taking care of our dog but then he doesn't either haha......of course he once didn't want to take care of me because it was my mom "who wanted the kid in the first place") . Maybe not vet fees though....don't think I could do that. But yeah.....so just wanted to know. I'm so excited ^0^

Doggies from the animal shelter usually will already have names, but I'm pretty sure you can rename him/her if you desire. (Don't forget the dog tags!) It's just that depending on the age and the dog's condition (for example, stress from abandonment or abuse), you might want to rename him/her something similar to its previous name to avoid unnecessary stress. Quick, snappy one to two syllable names are the best. They will just need to get used to their new name, but if you throw him/her treats every time you call him/her, he/she will start to pick up on it. Shower him/her with lots of love when he/she comes toward you and it won't be long before he/she knows to respond to his/her new name. Just stick to one name (don't go back and forth) otherwise you might confuse him/her.

Yay for shelter adoptions. (: It makes me really happy when people get pets from shelters or rescues.

Ahh~ this thread makes me really miss Joey. I'm here at school and he's back home with my family. ):

But, good luck with everything! Taking care of a dog is hard work, but very, very rewarding. <3

I knowwwww......I lived in Thailand for 8 years so there weren't any animal shelters and then I was going to move back to the US and I've always always wanted to get a dog from the shelter. It's like one of my dreams. Then I went to this shelter and saw all these cute dogs and so now I'm deciding to volunteer there too ^0^ because I don't have anything to do on weekends anyway.

Thanks~ because I'm definitely renaming him/her......my mom comes up with the coolest uniquest names hahah

hey, weren't you the one that made that other topic about volunteering at a shelter or something? so, your dad is going to let you have a dog now?? lucky! hahaha that's great

if it was me, i wouldn't rename him/her because...hmm, i don't know. it's just me, i guess. but i think renaming the dog would be fine.
