no. i don't think that's very polite.
in any context. whether the gift be from your s/o or from your parents or friends.
you shouldn't ask what they paid.
and probably shouldn't ask where they got it.
because then you might be tempted to go look at the price..

It's not exactly polite to ask, actually. Unfortunately, i'm someone who's really curious about these things but i refrain myself from asking about it. Besides, it's a gift; people take off or mark over the price tag for a reason. They actually get somewhat annoyed when someone ask them where they got it or how much it was cause it's like, "wth?

No, I wouldn't ask, it's kind of rude.

My boyfriend makes me return the expensive gifts I buy him because he knows I'm struggling financially right now. But even with other gifts, we usually ask about the prices because he hates being ripped off and he always says I could get it cheaper. it's weird, I know, but I guess it's more about saving money now since he's a poor graduate and I'm a poor student. The thought it always there though!

There may have been a few times where I felt the need to for whatever reason, and that was okay. But in general I just don't. There are exceptions when it's okay to ask, but in general I think it's rude. When my boyfriend buys me something, he buys it because he put a TON of thought into it whether I'd love it, not because it was cheap (affordable) or expensive (to show off).

i ask. but if he doesnt tell me i dont mind.
just curious to see if he'd actually tell me.
we eventually find out or tell eachother anyway, but price doesn't matter (:
