I've been at my current job for a little over an year and am not sure what to do. I work in law enforcement, in a very remote and desolate area, away from family and friends. I don't enjoy the work I do, partly due to my co-workers, homesickedness, loneliness, and mostly for the actual work I'm doing in the area I work. Most of the time, I think about quitting but am afraid I will regret it if I do so, especially with the economy nowadays. The pay and benefits are good, but that is the only thing that is keeping me going. I find myself counting the seconds and minutes to the end of my shift and it is starting to affect my job performance. I'd appreciate any advice/suggestions from you guys.

Are you a police officer? Have you looked into transferring to another department?

that's why it's called "work" most people don't enjoy it.

but you need it in order to live. sad but true.

marriage is going to be like that too.
what you can do is try to make it less stressful. (etc, stay away from managers, just do what they please haha)

i know what you mean. I had the same problem with my previous job, although I acutally liked most of the ppl i worked with. The way I worked my plan was to give myself a set timeline when I wanted to leave. My company was a small startup and I told myself that I would be around for 3 years at most or when the company was able to get into mass production, whichever came first. After 2 years and 7 months the company started gearing up for mass production so I kept to my decision and left.
Now a year on, I've moved countries and got a new job which I thoroughly love.

The only advice I can give you is none of this stick it out for as long as possible until something else comes up. I say set yourself a time limit for how long you think you're willing to putting up with it. Then stick to it. When that time rolls around, don't think, oh maybe I'll hang on to this job for a while. If you don't make the hard choices you won't get anywhere

well damn. looks like you and i are in the same spot.

Thing is I feel like i'm not going anywhere in my job. There is no job satisfaction and not much of a feeling of fulfillment, if you know what i mean. I see people here in my position for years upon years and i'm wondering how can they do it? Do they not have other career or life aspirations to get up and do something different?

the people are OK, but it's just the work itself and the work environment that's giving me the idea of quitting also. But I'm not really sure because of the current state of the economy. If i do choose to quit, I will probably be taking some classes at a city college and when i'm done in half a year or so, hope job searching will be easier.

sorry bo for the threadjack.... the way i see it. If you want to make a change, you have to get up and do it. Can't expect something to come around and fix it for you.

But i still haven't made up my mind.

I quit one job I didn't like to look for one I'd like better in the same field (education). It was one of the best things I ever did. The problem is that I'm almost too content in my current job whereas I really should be looking for something with more opportunities for career progression.

You don't want to just up and quit, because you might not get another job any time soon. If you really don't like your job, it's not worth keeping. Some people can do it, others can't. It all winds to whether or not you can live life working some place you hate. The best thing to do is prepare an exit strategy. Start looking for a new job that you might enjoy more, and see if you can get hired elsewhere some time in the near future. Good luck.

why donīt you just look around and see if there are any companies that would take you
and if itīs about money you can also see if they will pay you what you are earning now or at list
something that comes close to it i know we need to work we need money to pay for our lifes expences
but i also belive that where you work has to be a place where you can feel secure and you donīt have to be best friends with your co workes but getting along with them is something that would be nice couse it makes it all easier
i have never been in your place but if i were i think i would not stay in a place like that for a long time

i don't know how old you are, but i'm in my early 20's and working in a corporate office right now counting the time down to the last second till it hits 6 pm. I hate my job also, but you rather than being irrational and quitting, I think you should really look at the necessities right now. I'm sure you have bills to pay and what not, and if you pursued law enforcement, but don't like your current work environment, you should just work hard for the time being and look at other positions in the mean time. We're in the real world now and all the responsibilities that our parents once had for us is now all ours. "Do the right thing!"

work is work. do what you've got to do. we're not teenagers anymore. find an alternative outlet or like someone else said, look for another job.

i think if u put a goal to ur self u will bear this job.
like for exemple if u want to travel say that this job will pay u a good trip to an exotic place; or if u like something or have a hobby try to use it at work , i love photography and even if i hate my job at a hospital i can be so exited if i find an interesting topic to photograph!

I was in the same situation a few years back. I pinpointed on this one problem for a while and it forced me to take action. I found a job that month and left. I felt a lot happier at the job I'm at now, but I think I'm ready to leave again for better opportunities.

Honestly, it depends on how much you can afford to risk.

It's one thing to dislike your job - it's another thing to hate it.

It's a sad reality, but sometimes you have to make big sacrifices in order to get the job you will love. For instance, there are people who have to work full-time, but also pursue professional degrees at night.
