I enjoy listening to a song that consists of a catchy tune and the repetition of 5 words *ahemwondergirlsahem* as much as the next guy but does anybody here also like to listen to music that's behind our time? I mean artists like Ray Charles, Etta James, The Supremes, etc.

I don't know why I find their music so.. intriguing. I guess it's the melody, or the meaning of the song, or just the general time period they were in, i dunno.

I think Etta James has one of the THE most powerful and soulful voices I have ever heard

Incredible.

Decades ago? I listen to Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan, but that's about it.

I have done such. I've made some studies on electronic music from late 70th and 80th from western Europe when I was in Uni. This was a period where synths began to be used in songs and there are many interesting stuffs who have been created at this time. In fact, I realize that most of the originality whas created at this time, our days music is copying and remixing every thing from this period.

Speaking about creativity ratio, our days music is near to absolute zero.

Oh, me too, I love Ray Charles and Etta James. Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis. I especially like listening to them on rainy days, with the window open a little bit while reading a book and drinkin some nice coffee. Wierd, I know, but it just fits the mood for me. xD And I listen to Elton John still. =)

Billie Holiday

one of the best voices from last century. deep poetic sadness not many people can fathom.

I love Ella Fitzgerald's, Peggy Lee's, and Billie Holiday's voices. Also like listening to Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, amongst others whose names I can't remember at the moment. Most of the earlier music I listen to seem to revolve around the 30s-50s.
Can't say that I've listened to much music from the 60s-80s though
