I notice that on college campuses, fraternities and sororities hand out flyers to parties or events to people who are supposedly attractive or people who look "cool." A lot of people walk by but they only give it to some people. The frat guys especially like it to give them to attractive girls. At least that's what I'm getting from it. Is that true that they select certain people or do they really give it to random people?

Anyway, isn't that discrimination?

That's weird. I've never heard of fraternities or sororities handing out flyers. At my school, we aren't supposed to do things like that. Parties are pretty much "secretive" to the school/administration.

About your question, I'm sure they just invite random people, but they give it to the good-looking ones cause they'd rather see all the good-looking ones there, you know? I'm sure if they select certain people, they would give out more than a flyer and wouldn't be so public about it.

At my school I see them do that too.
They hand out an invitation to my bf 2 times (by 2 different people but same party)
I don't know what it's for...usually it is a way to recruit people.

uhhh I thought frat/sorority don't hand out flyers for parties, mainly how you get invited to parties is through word of mouth or texting nowadays.

^Its not just through mouth or texting. A lot of people are invited/find out about parties through facebook (events/people's profile pages/etc).

At my school(a UC), frats/sororities seem to hand out flyers and stuff to attractive guys/girls.. but they do hand out flyers to random people from time to time.

edit-- flyers for RUSH events* not parties.. and like lovecubedlee said, its generally around rush week/club fair/etc.

Not to make any sweeping generalizations but I noticed that it's usually the Asian ones that hand out flyers. I go to a UC as well and there's a whole bunch of Asians... obviously.

they give out flyers during like rush week and other school-appropriate events...
they definitely won't pass out flyers for parties...
i got a buttload of flyers from asian sororities during rush week

as for parties, you will like automatically get in if you have connections...if you're a girl....or a HOT girl...
some frats are more strict...they want "the ratio" of girls to guys and they don't want it to be so full the cops come and shut it down...and for my school, some parties have a guestlist now

Interesting, I've never seen any frat/sorority give out flyers to people just for a party. Typically I get into those by knowing people who are members. Also if you are referring to rush events/parties then usually they would post up the flyer :/

In my college, people do distribute flyers! One of the reasons why flyers are handed out to more "attractive" people is because they look like the type that would show up to parties. Also, the frat/sororities have only a certain amount of flyers and they don't want to hand it out to people that would just take it only to throw away. However, there are some parties/events from frats/sororities that leak events through word-of-mouth or via facebook.

I'm sure they are. Frats and sororities want to attract people. In a sociology class I'm in now my prof mentioned how they're like joining a gang which I think is true.

We don't hand out flyers for parties. We invite other fraternities/sororities and friends basically by giving them passes to present for entry, and then these friends are free to bring their friends to come too, the more the merrier.

Normally, Frats want more girls then guys showing up to their party.
So, where I go to school, girls find out about parties more than guys, unless guys have friends in a frat.
IDK, about good looking girls, probably....sounds like something frat guys would do.
