I try to avoid awkward situations as much as possible so texting is great escape

Yeah, it sometimes happens.
I do it, especially when I'm around people that I don't know and I can't/don't want to talk to anyone... I usually pretend to text or just send random texts to my friends. Or just looking trough my bag like I want to find something. hehe

you're definitely not alone.
i do that all the time...makes me look like i'm busy with something
so i can avoid having contact with another person.
