Outrage in South Korea - soompi forums

This is fairly old news, but I just recently found out about it and felt that it's important to get it out there.

A 57 year old man in Ulsan dragged an 8 year old, on her way to school, into a public bathroom (a building which also housed a church) and brutally beat her, repeatedly stuck her head in a toilet, and once she lost consciousness, raped and sodomized her for an hour.

It gets much worse

He then panicked and tried to get rid of the biological evidence by using a plunger on her until her intestines, and other organs, were literally sucked out from inside her body. then he used the handle of the plunger to try to shove it back inside her. when that didn't work, he flushed the organs down the toilet, tried to clean up, and then propped her up into a sitting position. he decided to rape her one more time before fleeing the scene.

the girl lost 80% of her large intestines and has to have a bag attached to the outside of her body for the rest of her life to replace its function. she has no sexual functions. she's EIGHT.

Cho showed up to the trial wearing glasses and with his hair dyed, presumably in an effort to keep the 8 year old girl from recognizing him.

He was sentenced 12 years because he was drunk at the time and not in a sufficient mental state.

I did not copy and paste any specific article myself because each one seems to leave out at least one of these specific details, most in English print don't even mention the plunger, just that she has suffered permanent injuries to her organs which, i don't think correctly conveys the horror of it all.

Koreans are going crazy over this sentencing with most calling for him to receive the death penalty, but the supreme court has agreed with the sentencing, the chief justice stating that the law should not be swayed by public opinion. yeah, you're right, it shouldn't be. but You should have seen from the very beginning that even life in prison wouldn't be a fitting enough sentence and the fact that you didn't just proves that you're animals just like him. what kind of heartless thing could possibly think that sentence was appropriate? the law shouldn't be subject to public opinion, but it shouldn't be "upheld" by a bunch of monsters too heartless to be even called animals. how can monsters like you possibly hope to justly enforce the laws that govern humanity when you don't even know what it means to be "human"?

Thankfully, the "public" is not as soulless as its justices and there is an OUTRAGE over the decision. the government is being flooded with demands for a stricter sentence and officials are trying to work out stricter legislation for all sex crimes. a group of 100+ people in an internet community called for the police to drop him off in an isolated location and "they'll take care of it" in all seriousness. many people are even writing the prison he is being sent to, asking inmates to kill him upon arrival. which is, somehow, weirdly cute. the police have not identified him in any way other than to call him "cho" because they KNOW someone will kill him, even if it's a total stranger.

and in this instance...i'm a little proud to be korean, oddly enough. sure the public, especially the internet communities, go beserk over the smallest thing and completely blow things out of proportion. sure, they act insane a lot of the time. but in this case, i'm glad that they care so much, are so invested, because you know that if something happened like that here, sure we'd be outraged, but it would be forgotten in a matter of weeks and i doubt if anyone would pursue the case and be able to get enough of the public interested to actually bring about significant change.

His name's already out in the public, it's du-soon cho. he had a 24 year sentence but it was cut in half because he was drunk. even 24 years is not enough... in korean it would be accurately described as "죽어도 싸" (it's not enough to kill him).
