So I've had my Macbook Pro for almost 3 years now. These past 7 months it's increasingly getting slower. When I'm running programs like safari (multiple browsers open) and MSN the 'beach ball' pops up and starts loading. Usually it also takes forever to switch over from one program to another. I have 1GB RAM, which should be able to handle the programs I use.

Another problem I have is that my mac won't charge. It only works while the charger is connected to the Mac and it tells me that it's fully charged, but as soon as I disconnect it it tells me that I only have 20-30% left which runs out in 5-10 mins as It does go down decreasingly but skips from 30% to 25 and so on.

My fan is quite loud too. I dropped the laptop a while back and it's been loud since. I don't know if the fan might have sightly popped out of it's place or if that's even possible.

Here's this as-well... dunno if it will help.

Any help or solutions to fix this would be greatly appreciated. I'm not novice when it gets to computers so please keep it at a beginners level. =)

It seems that you need a new battery as your current laptop battery is refusing to take charge thus it is why it's saying it's charging, but the meter drops when you unplug the cord.

From the screen shot, your fan becomes loud because your laptop is over heating, badly. I would suggest you open and clean the inside, but that's probably too much for you. Have a friend who is skilled in doing these things, help you. Maybe go buy some thermal paste and apply it to the CPU. I have no idea what you're running, but the GPU is high also. Maybe you're playing a game? Consider not leaving your laptop on when you are AFK at school or out or even setting a shop in game when you're not around. Maybe you can tell us what type of applications you're running for a better visualization of what's causing this heat.

Your ram is being used up quite a lot, consider adding another ram stick or try not to use too many applications at once. You can also try doing a clean install of OSX and go easy on the unnecessary applications by not installing them.

So happy someone got back to me. Thanx a lot. biggrin.gif

I'm not running any games. The only things that are usually running are 'several' (10-20) tabs on safari and MSN with iTunes occasionally. My laptop's ALWAYS on but it's put to sleep... is that good enough or should I turn it off completely?

The heat problem is a more current issue (past six months) but I'm running all the same applications as before.

I'll try to do a clean install as soon as a get another portable HD to transfer my stuff to. I've also already quit some stuff in the Activity Monitor (hopefully that'll help a little).

Is cleaning the fan really all that difficult? I've done it twice on my old Sony PC... I don't know how much it differs to the Macbook Pro.

If you put the laptop to sleep and it still heats up, then best to shut it down completely. Cleaning a fan or the inside of the laptop isn't difficult, but opening it up might trigger some loose pieces and it can be hard putting the laptop back together. I believe this also voids the warranty, but I may be wrong.

My other laptop was heating badly at the point where I couldn't even play games anymore, so I opened the GPU area and cleaned out the dusts. After that, I was able to play games again without bad frame rates. If your laptop have sections for you to open at the bottom, you may open and clean out the dusts this way instead of unscrewing all the screws and taking the whole cover off.

You also said your fan might have fallen out of place therefore you should put it back into place when you get the chance.
