Uh, use AIM? If your friends are connected to AIM via mobile, then you should be able to text them.
If not then... IDK. Sorry.

If you don't have text, but have data plan, get an AIM app on your phone that uses data. Then you can message your friends by IMing +phonenumber.

Example: +1510xxxxxxx
Where x = 7 digits. You must include +1 and the area code. In this case, 510 is the area code.

if you are in the US you can also use Gmail to text. Go to settings, then 'Labs' and click enable. Its still experimental, but its been working for me.

Since I have texting but no data plan, I set up my gmail to forward my email to my phone through texts biggrin.gif

I know a whole lot of websites that let you send sms for free. But they're all only for Norwegian people. So I doubt it'll help you much.

Smsutopia.com is international, I believe.

I know you can do it in Rogers for Canada but you have to sign in with your own billing account.

You can send emails to your friend and your friend would receive it as a text message. Just have to find out what phone company your friend is using. Umm, just go to the link.

Get a hold of a Google Voice invite. You can use that to text people for free.

This site lets you send free messages and get replies. But I think there is a monthly limit.
