So I go to a very competitive school. It's a public magnet school with like the top-ranked students in the county.
In our school, everyone really cares about their grades and most of us work hard.

Anyways, one of my friends has been relly getting on my nerves recently.
I've known her for around 3 months and I consider her a very close friend. However, sometimes her attitude annoys me.
You know those people who complain about like a 98? She's that kind of person.
But I get the feeling that she doesn't do it just to complain. I feel like she wants to be showered by compliments.

In biology, we had to do a lab report and most people got around 17-20/25. She knew this.
However, we both got a 23.5. She complained quite loudly about this and people were like, "___, you're so smart!"
For some reason, it annoys me to no end. In all honesty, I guess I want to be showered with praise also.
But at the same time, it's not right to complain about a grade if it's a little less than perfect,
And knowing that others did much worse. It just really peeves me.

We're both Korean, and I know Asian parents are extremely strict on grades and whatnot.
And that Asian parents what their children to be perfect academically.

Am I the only one who finds this sort of thing annoying D:?

Hellz yes that's annoying.
She's like one of those skinny girls who crave for attention. They'll say, "But OMG I'm SOOO fat." and then wait for their friends to flock over to comfort her. So pathetic.

so you think she fishes for compliments lol
i'm annoyed by it too but sometimes i catch myself doing it. sometimes i'll say that i'm too fat even though i know that i'm skinny just for the sake of complaining and reassurance from my friends...

Man, even hearing this makes me wanna thump a hammer on her head.

I hate it even more when smart people, WHO ARE OBVIOUSLY SMART, complain about being stupid.

Makes me wanna ram them over in a tank.
Money talks and my happy poopoo walks.

freakin' yes. i hate it when people do that.

in any kind of way like the whole fat thing or "i'm ugly!" ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

gets me mad and sometimes i want to just agree and go all "yes, you are quite dumb/fat/ugly." but sometimes the person has such low self esteem and quick tempers that i just don't want to go through the trouble.

Hmm do you by any chance go to TJ in NoVA? <.< >.> That sounds like such a familiar situation.
I knew several people like that back in high school, though most people were pretty chill despite caring a lot about grades and only whined with genuine cause. Genuine by our standards, anyway.

Actually, I still get annoyed by this pretty often now in university. One of my friends is dating a guy who complains about his grades all the time when he gets pretty much all A's. Even worse, he's in most of the same classes as my friend/his girlfriend, knows she got a lower mark on the same assignment or test, and still complains to her about his "low" mark. I don't know if it makes it that much better that he doesn't actually seem to be fishing for compliments. It still makes me want to punch him sometimes even though we get along fine, especially since his grades are what science students at our university DREAM of getting (they're in the Humanities).
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

maybe she just needs compliments. kind of like for a reassurance..or perhaps to find acceptance..
people need to be praised every now and then i think..

this would only irritate me if she rubbed it in my face if i got lower than her. like "darn i got a 98%..gosh *^&^%&*. but, HAHA i did better than yoooooo"
hm..maybe she just needs someone to tell her that it makes people who did worse than her feel inferior.
idk.
i guess it's like telling a chubbier friend "man, i feel fat today. i shouldnt have eaten half that pizza last night," hm?
i feel restricted when i cant say things on a whim like that to people i consider friends..am i stupid?

OMG I thought I was the only one with a friend like that o:
My friend on her socials test got like 14/15 and she was like , "NOOO THAT'S SO NOT GOOD ENUFF"
The day she got her test back , we walked home together and the whole way she was like "I'm gonna FAIL socials" the whole way , she said it like 584573984759834 times , I was just "yeah" "okay" "don't worry" "it's only first term" "you can still catch up" ... >_>; SHES SO ANNOYING ! D; I once got a 1 mark higher than her in a test , but my friends didn't say anything but she was like "I failed" and everyone comforts her instead . I mean wtf . >_>;

I think she's one of those people who say negative things about themselves (when they're obviously not true)
just so that they can get compliments and reassuring comments from everyone else around them.
Sounds down right annoying! Maybe you should let her know that it gets on your nerves. Nicely.

I remember when we kissed, I still feel it on my lips.
the time that you danced with me, with no music playing.

She is definitely an ATTENTION SEEKER.
She'll do something or say something indirectly and wants others to realise her presence..
Such people are usually selfish because they would only want praises and get surrounded by as many people as possible...

I had friends who are attention seekers too. And I know how your anger can build up even when she frowned as she saw her 23.5mark paper.

If this is the only flaw of her personality, then calm her down or rather asked her not to complain on such unnecessary matters. If she continues, I guessed that's her personality and she needs someone to show her who momma is.. =)

I find it annoying. Sooner or later everyone else is gonna get sick of showering her with compliments. Just ignore her if you can.

I have experience with this, first hand in both ways, being the whiner and the one who listens to them. It's a normal response.

The annoying part is 'cause you think they should be happy, but not; however, in reality, you don't know what they're feeling. These types of hi-standard people have low-self-esteem. I could say average of 30-50% of their complaint comes from wanting attention. In actually, this is not the initial reason for whining, it is a by-product of whining that the whiners conveniently absorb afterward.

The complainers do what they do because they feel like poop.
~yes, they feel reallly bad, you have to trust me on this. Basically, not only do they feel stupid for not getting perfect, but they also "didn't get what they want". This is a big thing, it's childish, but everyone wants to get what they want- including perfect scores on everything...

Lastly, it's important to realize that the annoying person isn't trying to be annoying on purpose, they're in the moment in which they've lost input from the outside(other people) unless it pertains to the complainer, and they only care about themselves at the moment. No, they don't care about their popularity [for being a whiner, for being smart, for having high-standards], they just can't hold in their pain of "failure." They're just trying to get the point out that they're feeling terrible right now. They honestly don't care about the average scores(everyone else that is)- since those students are not complaining about it, "they must have low-standards or have no problems with their scores."

Keep in mind that what I'm saying is not the actual fact that exists; it is a fact of what is going on in the heads of whiners(something like whiners' opinions).

You can deal with them by saying, "I agree", when they say, "I'm stupid". stuff like that. Never ignore them, this is the stupidest thing, and it's even more annoying then the whining, everyone hates people who don't listen; and your friend will just go off ranting somewhere else. Not to you, but the rants will go on no matter what...
Say something to encourage studying-
of course, "Do better next time", or "That grade is good enough for me" work also.
The 2nd quote only works if you scored same or higher than that person, otherwise, that complaining person will just dis you for having low standards and not doing as well as him/herself.

I find it annoying, too. There was this girl who has a 99% in her AP English Class and then she was complaining because it's not a 100%. I was so annoyed.

She's probably just those people who needs to be complimented to feel better about themselves which is quite annoying.

ninshark's answer is interesting. i think that yes, at times, it can be true.

BUTTT.. in some cases, they're just doing it to brag and act like a jerk, and make everyone think that they are better. lol
