So in May 2009, i quit my first full-time job at a financial/tax/insurance company which i worked for 2 yrs...i was an assistant manager. The owner and manager loved me..and they were willing to teach me whatever i wanted to learn...but the work load was crazy...tax season was crazy..and the pay wasn't so good...without any benefits. So i quit. Now they want me back...but the pay will be less...unless i proven myself that i will be dedicated...and could negotiate the rate..but i will have to be 100% committed.

Now, i'm working a 100% commission job as a life insurance agent...i am given leads...but i have to make appointments and visit their homes....but so far, i haven't been making much...jus about the same as my old job..with jus less hours..but has a lot of pressure to make ends meet. I'm constantly stressed out to make sales...and im not a sales type of person. But if i get good...i will make double than my old job. It may take 6 months for me to get good...but so far..i've been stressing out like crazy.

I know that the economy isn't doing so good and its always wise to take any job offers....but i dunno if i should go w/ my old job...i will learn so much...taxes, insurance, finance, insurance, estate planning..i will work closely w/ the owner who i really respect. But the pay isn't gonna be good but its stable but..that means i would have to get a part-time job w/ it...like a weekend job..etc. Im 24 btw...what would u guys do? isnt it normal to go back to a job that you had quit? i jus said goodbye to everyone...but i'm in good terms w/ my boss and manager. tips...advice?? thanks!!

Commission sales is...difficult. Unless you have strong drive, initiative, and determination (which you've basically stated you don't have for the job), going back to the old job would be better. In your current job, the only pros are increased pay (meaning you'd have to work harder or improve your sales personality), which then could possibly lead to regional sales manager or something along those lines. Maybe there's more options in your company..I don't know. However, in your old job you have such great opportunity to learn. Given more years and knowledge, since obviously they like you enough to re-offer, you would be able to move up. There's more opportunity in the old job. I would go with your old job since it seems you have more passion for it. It was just the pay that wasn't good, but the pay is the same with the new. There are a percentage of people returning to their old jobs. There's nothing wrong with that, especially in this economy. As long as you get over feeling uncomfortable, it'll be alright. They're obviously not going to feel uncomfortable.

i didn't like commission sales. unless YOU are CONFIDENT that you are persuasive and smart about it. I used to work for telemarketing and i was working based on low commissions, and it was such a drag.

The first job is better. how long were you working at your first job? If you get 5-10 years experience on the first job it would look amazing in your resume and you can use it as an actual skill.

Then while working the first job after 5+ years. try to negotiate a better pay and benefits/promotions. if they don't provide you with that.. still work there.. while looking for another related job somewhere else with better pay and benefits. (i'm sure people will look at it)

then later once your skills improve you can ask about raises. etc.

why don't you do both parttime?

I think the first job is better too. Commission sales are really hard to do, you have to travel so far and the income you'll receive is not stable.

It might seem weird going back to your old job because you've already said goodbye to everyone. But them wanting you back means they valued what you were doing before, right? I'm sure they'll accept you in again with open arms. In the beginning it might be really stressful and difficult again, but once you get used to it things will get easier, and you could potentially rise up the ranks. And if the owner and manager loved you, I'm sure you can negotiate more pay for the good work that you do

Good luck! I hope everything will work out for you fine!

Your sanity is worth more than your salary. If you have to kill yourself to give yourself a raise in a commission job, it probably won't be worth it. If you think you can adjust and get more comfortable with more of a salesman type position, then do it. If not, go back.

interesting choice of words. because when i was doing sales based on commission.. i was sorta losing my mind because i was living on trying to entice people to my product (mortgage changing APR)...

let me share a story i've personally went through

me - "hey we are mtg company, we're calling in behalf of your mortgage"
him -"I'm not interested, do me a favour and put me on the do not call list, if you call again i'll sue you."
me - "Come on man we can really change your APR"
him -"Do you f#$kin hear me? i'll F#$kin' sue you, i'll kill you and your whole family" (cursing continue for another 5 min)
me - "please?"

one thing led to another and i had to get the manager. for some reason even tho he said he was going to kill my family.. i was in desperate need of money and i didn't want to give up. mellow.gif . and i didn't even realize what I've done at work once i got home.

Then i realized sales wasn't my job. ha-ha.

I'm not really trying to discourage you if you ever choose to do sales. but this is what i personally went through. wacko.gif
hope my experience helps.

I personally believe that even if you get RICH and SUCCESSFUL off of commission based work. you're still going to be stressed.

I would go back to the other job or sell something else. I would not feel too good about myself if I was selling whole life insurance. I don't believe they are good products.

I'd stay with your original job, I don't believe in "100% commission jobs", I think all work should be rewarded.

But.. again.. Insurance Jobs aren't exactly that good in the first place. Have you thought about going back to school, or just doing a career change?
