So I called Rogers and apparently you NEED a data plan with any smart phone? I thought you didn't need one cause a few of my friends have Blackberry's without em. So yeah, if anyone could clear this up for me that'd be great and if anyone can tell me of a provider which doesn't require data plans (if any) please say.

Your friends get email on their blackberries? If they do, they have a data plan.

Cell phone company recently started requiring you to add a data plan with any smart phone. If you friends got the blackberry before they started to requiring data plans then they do not need to get it.

shoot =/ thanks n'ways.
you can buy the phone and cancel the data plan.
after buying it, put your sim in a different phone and call the provider and tell them to block your data.
then put your sim back into your blackberry or any smartphone.
phone providers lie about those data crap because they want your money.

wow thats smart..so they wont deny the request at all? im surprised they would just cancel it when they require it to be in your plan..why do u need to put the sim in a different phone though?

When you call they can run a check to see what phone you are using. So if you call while you're using a dumb phone the chances of them denying your request is low.
Even after the call is made, I would keep the sim card in there until I can confirm that the block is on and in effect.

Verizon I think it is necessary to have a data plan with a smartphone, there's no way around it. I believe is how their system is set up.
