can you turn in an ONLINE portfolio with digital media type stuff as a portfolio (of course there will be drawings on there included as well) but does anyone have any idea on what specifically they want from a portfolio?

You cannot submit work online if that is what you are asking.
The portfolio requirements are listed on the website, check the application link.
You will either need to send a hardcopy (that is, printed material in a portfolio book) or slides, which is the most common way. When I applied I submitted slides of my work.
I had my slides made by submitting High res jpgs to http://www.iprintfromhome.com/ , and, no joke, they came 2 days later.
