Koreans tend to be good at things that require a lot of concentration. No doubt this has to do with the fact that success in Korea usually requires one to do well on a number of long, boring tests.

Just look at how Koreans are when they go fishing compared to Americans. Americans are breaking out the beer, enjoying the sun, and chatting and laughing it up. Look at a row of Korean guys fishing. From their expressions you'd think they were playing chess. I've gone fishing with Koreans and damn is it boring if you're the only person who's not really into it.

Oddly enough, though, chess is one thing very few Koreans are good at. Perhaps they don't find it as challenging as baduk. BTW, these days baduk is more of an old folks game. You can probably thank Starcraft for that.
