Okay, so I checked my network places, just to see if everything was okay...and i clicked on 'connection status', and under IP address, it says 'subnet mask' and under that 'default gateway'....then i clicked on 'details' n then there was a list, saying 'lease obtained', and the date was today, and then 'lease expires',and the date is tomorrow?? What does this mean?? I don't think I ever saw this before...does this mean that my internet will get disconnected??

the thing is...i'm using a desktop...isn't that only for wireless routers? Is it a virus or hacking?? I dl music sometimes, n my computer has been lagging a bit as well as the internet, well sorta...n my hard drive makes a 'whirring' noise...n the disk space increases/decreases at times, though it's not that noticeable...please help! thank you! (sorry for being so paranoid lol)

When a lease time expires, it'll renew the dynamic IP for your computer automatically. You can set this to expire in a day, 2 days, etc. and it will not matter because it's going to expire anyways. Your internet will not get disconnected nor will you lose your internet when a lease time expires.

A desktop computer can be linked to a router via network cable or wireless card, just like a laptop. Your computer might be lagging because of other applications that is taking up resources. Perhaps your internet is being shared among others therefore the lag occurs. If you do not allow any neighbor to use your internet, put a WEP or WPA password up. Are you sure it's your hard drive that is making that noise instead of the fan? If it's the hard drive, is it not a clicking sound? About your disk space increasing/decreasing, it can be because you're using an application that writes real time data and deletes it after you're done.

^ oh i see, okay, i think i get it now...i was getting worried...i checked the status again, and it says that it'll expire again, but if it reconnects automatically, guess i should just let it be...

how do i set up a password? is it only for wireless connection?
about the hard drive, no i don't think it's a clicking noise...it might be the fan, perhaps(?)
for the disk space increase/decrease, is there anyway to lessen the amount of 'compressed files', as well as the 'setup log files', on disk cleanup?
thank you so much for clarifying things, sorry if i sounded paranoid lol

Since we don't know what router you have, it's best to list it. If you have a Linksys router, navigate to 192.168.1.1 and login. Then go to Wireless tab and click on Wireless Security.

Security mode is the security type for your wireless internet. (disable, WEP, WPA Personal, etc.) I'd go with WPA Personal since WEP is easy to crack.

Default Transmit Key is the password you prefer to allow access. When you enter a passphrase, it'll generate several security keys. So if your Default Transmit Key is set to 2, then you will use Key 2 security key.

For encryption, you can use 64 bit or 128 bit. 64 bit gives you less characters to enter when you try to connect to the access point while 128 bit gives you more. I prefer 128 bit to feel more secure.

For the hard drive, you can try to defrag it.
