I was talking to my friend about being able to spy on people, when he mentioned something called "packet sniffing" for AIM. The way he explained it- you could use it to know exactly what someone who is chatting with you is doing, saying ..etc.

Anyone know how to do this?
Just out of curiousity laugh.gif

I wish.. LoL.. I'm not that big of a nerd.. or at least not that devoted to the cause. I don;t feel like searching warez sites and dealing with the underworld. Oi.. crazy packet sniffing has been around forever.
I am the minority here.

Sure the easiest is to get Ethereal and a wifi card... connect to an open wireless hotspot and let it sniff... if they are using it you can see what website they are at, what they are reading and if its aim chats, it looks like AIM in HTML.

Why do you think I encourage people to encrypt their networks?

Or install a keylogger w/out their knowledge haha. Not just AIM, but practically everything

you don't want to take an interest in the wrong side of electronic security... if you're that curious, just ask them what they're doing...

I believe in summarizing how easy it is to try to raise awareness to how dangerous things can be.

See the thing about sniffing is you can only really do it locally.
Local is like the other computer on your network.
Or public places such as Starbucks or your school, I was told that the data does get encrypted even over open access points but its still best not to risk it.

The security risks isn't TOO high since I can't see what you're doing from here over the internet.
But basically once a packet sniffer is going it will see a request for lets say http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=32348 then you will see the HTML code of this page followed by jibberish for the images.

AIM is similar, it looks like HTML (not quite but similar) and everything comes through clearly. I find that scary.

Anyways back to getting caught... Legally I believe its considered gray zones in most areas. Its obviously digital trespassing but when the user doesn't encrypt their stuff its similar to someone talking on the phone loudly... you can hear everything and its the same with Wifi this is where the gray zone would be. They're blasting their wireless signal everywhere and well =\ they need to do something to protect it. Now if it were secure and they hacked it thats DEFINITELY illegal and considered digital trespassing smile.gif

Either way dont do it, just be aware so the next time you have some creepy guy sitting outside your house with a laptop you know they can be using your internet and they can see everything you send over the network.

Personally if I was gonna do some script kiddie stuff I prefer the man in the middle attack:) But you have to be on someone's network to do that. The man in the middle attack has a special place in my heart since it was one of the first attacks I ever learned to do. laugh.gif

but hey without these interest no one would develop cool internet security featues..... o wait, i guess there would be no need for security in the first place if this didn't happen. lol
