lately something weird happened to my computer, turning on the computer works, and windows loads, but my desktop won't show, alls i get is a blank black screen. I tried going to safe mode, but that won't work either. Does anybody know whats wrong. I want to try and reinstall xp, but don't want to risk losing all my files.

When you get to that screen that lets you access safe mode, try to use "boot to last known good configuration"
If that fails, then you might want to use the windows disk. Dont use the recovery console, but do a Repair Install. Repair install puts back all your windows files but keeps your files and programs.

does that hard disk activity light on your computer keep on flickering after the screen goes blank or does it just stop... it sounds like it could have something to do with your graphics...
yes, if you want to recover your files, try the repair that awdark mentioned
