i think you can get away with using vobsub for this problem... you can find it here http://www.divx-digest.com/software/vobsub.html

I got that message today. Try BSPlayer. Just load your movie and then load your separate subtitle files.

Open Media player Classic > VIEW>Options >OUtPUT

Check this VMR9 Renderless(under the heading Direct Show Video)
Check Direct X 9** (under the heading Realmedia Audio)
Check Direct X 9** (under the heading Quicktime Video)

Then click Apply. Close Player.
Open Player again and open the file and then load the subs.
