《申》：我看过Rain出道前的照片，其貌不扬，您怎么会相中这么一个毛头小子？
朴：1999年，在韩国有一个唱片公司内部举办的、类似于我型我SHOW的选秀比赛，当时我是评委。在一群选得上，选不上，都无所谓的选手中间，我看到一个与众不同的男生，眼神里写满了饥渴，好像万一选不上，一生就要结束的样子。听说他的家境很贫困，妈妈已到糖尿病晚期，生活难以为继。没人相信他能成为歌手，因为他唱得实在太烂了！但是我对那双眼神印象太深刻了，我发现他虽然不会唱歌，但嗓音条件其实不差，舞蹈基础也好，好好调教，绝对能成功。
《申》：Rain也不敢相信，您会选他吧？
朴：他问我，我会红么？我说，你离成名还很遥远，所以一切从头开始。我带着他，开始了为期3年半，像在少林寺苦行一样得训练。
《申》：都说韩式造星很残酷，看来不假？
朴：（笑）没那么夸张啦。给你们学的，都是我自己编的教材。和Rain同期的，还有另外两批学员，包括GOD组合、朴志胤。平时我自己也有演出，所以不可能把所有时间耗在一个人身上。我一个星期给他们上3次课，每次2小时，其余时间，他们自学，然后交作业给我检查，不合格的重来。
《申》：具体学些什么呢？
朴：别的歌手，一上来就学技巧，但是我要让他们先认识自己的声音。Rain一直以为自己只能唱到高音mi，我就慢慢帮他调音，调到了高音la。有一次练唱，在他不知情的情况下，我慢慢把原调提了几个音，他居然能唱下来。唱完我告诉他，他几乎不敢相信。

第一年，我没有表扬过他一次－－Rain一路哭了4小时
《申》：在少林寺里，Rain是刻苦的学生么？
朴：他至今都是最认真的，从来不偷懒。但是第一年，我没有表扬过他一次。
《申》：故意的吧？
朴：是的，我常常表扬别的男孩子，唯独对他永远是批评。我就是要看看他的承受力到底有多强？其实我心里想的是，他一定会成功的。那时候，Rain一直觉得，朴震荣不喜欢我！甚至在1年半左右，他灰心丧气得都要放弃了。我问他为什么要走？他说自己实力不够。我脸一板，说，你到那边去，给我跪下！我还没放弃你，你凭什么放弃自己？
《申》：为什么采用如此冷酷教学法？
朴：我始终相信，一个艺人真正的激情，不经过磨难，是爆发不出来的。
《申》：Rain被您训哭过么？
朴：让我想想......记得有两次吧。一次是他的生日，正好离他的首次登台不远。我告诉他们，训练期间，忘记自己的生日吧，不要去想这些东西。他的同伴悄悄给他办了生日会，想给他个惊喜，就打电话叫他去。他想顶多1个小时就回来，结果偏偏出门时被我抓住。到时候在台上出丑，看你还过什么生日！我训了他一顿，毕竟还是小孩子，心里想着蛋糕，肯定很委屈，结果痛哭流涕；还有一次，是培训快结束时，已经积累了一些舞台经验，而且陆续有歌迷给他写信。我感觉这小子开始打飘了。有一次从首尔到其他地方演出，有差不多5小时的车程，他作业没完成，我当着一车人的面批评他。他积蓄已久的愤怒一下子爆发了。我当作没看见，假装睡觉。而他呢，一路哭过去，大概哭了4个小时。
《申》：您什么时候觉得，是时候了，放心让他登台了？
朴：2002年有一次演出，在后台，他说，让我自己试试看吧。我问他，真的不需要我帮忙？真的可以？他点点头。结果他征服了全场。那一刻，我很自豪。
《申》：您觉得Rain的最大魅力是什么？
朴：有时是值得信赖的男子汉，有时又是不懂事的大男孩。

Shen : I heard that Korean stars' were cruelly trained, it seems true then?
Park : (laughing) Not that exaggerating. I designed all the teaching materials that is to be learned. In the same batch as Rain, there were two other groups of students, including GOD, Park Zhi Yin. Normally, I have my own perfomances, so I cannot spend all my time on one person. I gave them lessons 3 times a week, 2 hours per lesson. For the rest of the time, they have to learn on their own, then hand in the homework for me to check. If you don't pass, you have to re-do.
Shen : On the whole, what do they learn?
Park : For the other singers, they start with learning singing techniques. But I wanted them to know their own voices first. Rain always thought he can only reach "mi" as his highest pitch. So, slowly, I helped him to pitch his tone, to reach the high note "la". During one training session, without his knowledge, I slowly raised the original pitch by a few keys, and he actually reached them. After he finished singing, I told him what happened, he could hardly believed it.

At that time, Rain was thinking, "Park Jin Young doesn't like me!". In actual fact, he comtemplated giving up after about one and a half years. He was that disheartened. I asked him for the reason for leaving. He told me he felt that he does not have what it takes to be successful. I told him sternly, "Go over there and kneel down! I have not gave up on you, how dare you give up on yourself?"
Shen : Why did u use such "cruel training methods"?
Park : I always believe, an artiste's real passion, without tough training, will not be able to be fully released.
Shen : Did Rain ever cried due to your tough training?
Park : Let me recall...I remember there were 2 times. Once was on his birthday, which was also not far from his debut performance. I told him, during the training period, forget about your birthday, don't think of such things. He friends had secretly planned a birthday party for him, thinking of giving him a surprise, and called him out. He was thinking of just going off for an hour, but I caught him on his way out! "If you disgrace yourself on stage, see whether you still want to celebrate your birthday!". I gave him a dressing down, after all, he was still a kid, still yearned of birthday cake and all that. He must have felt much grievance, for he started crying sadly. Another time, was after training. He had some stage experiences, even received some fan letters. I was thinking, this kid is started to take off. Once, on his way from Seoul to another performance location, about 5 hours of travelling time, as he did not complete his homework, I gave him a dressing down in front of everyone in the car. Those frustrations and grievances that he has pented up for so long erupted in one go. I pretended not to notice, pretended to sleep. And him...he cried all the way to the location, about 4 hours I think.
Shen : When did you decide, that its time that he is able to debut on stage?
Park : 2002, during one perfomance, at the backstage, he said, "Let me try." I asked him, "You really don't need my help? Really can do it?" He nodded. In the end, he took the stage down. At that moment, I was so proud.
Shen : What do you think was Rain's biggest attraction?
Park : Sometimes, he seems like a reliable man, sometimes like an ignorant boy.
