A Mass Marketed Rollercoaster Ride
Bi's "Rain's World" by jeanhee
I have a lot of respect for Bi. He had a hard knock life and lost his mother at an early age to cancer. He worked his way up the JYP ladder, working first as a back dancer for Park Ji Yoon and then finally taking the chance to run solo. Many of his fellow artists give him a lot of respect for his past, saying that he worked twice as much and had twice as much heart as his contemporaries. His determination and dedication to his art really shows whether its in his dramas, movies, or music. But honestly, I dont really feel his mass marketing crap. The cross-over that JYP is trying to prepare him to do its not right.
And its obvious in the very first track of the album. The intro where he speaks a bunch of garbled English makes me embarrassed. He has a very nice voice, but his struggle with English is extremely apparent. And unfortunately, the second track (and also the albums first single) doesnt save it. The song is mediocre at best with a cheap club beat and an annoying techno wail in the background. Even Tablos little rap diddy sounds ridiculous. This song is an obvious scheme of JYPs marketing scheme to advertise Bi as a dance/club artist. And considering Park Jin Youngs friends in America are composed of artists such as Lil Jon makes his tactic pretty transparent.
The album picks up from there with tracks #3 and #4 showing what Bi does best: upbeat ballads. Listeners and critics really dont give him enough credit in these tracks. His airy, slightly raspy, yet soft voice is perfect for these types of songs (in the style of I Do from his last album). As for his collaboration efforts, the duet with 임정희 (Im Jeong-hee) is average. An absolutely disastrous collab is #11 with AI. Ironic that the song starts with some idiot saying, Deadly combination right here, because if anything, this song just bores to death. If by deadly, they meant deadly indistinctive, then theyre right on the money.
Track #7 with Dynamic Duo, however, is phenomenal. With the duos hard raps and then with Bis voice, the chemistry fizzles with pure magic. The last collaboration track is #12 with the famous Tiger JK. It begins with a piano solo for almost 45 seconds until Bi begins to sing. The song could have done without Tiger JKs input, which just ultimately made the song sound cheesy in a bad early 90s rap sort of way.
Listening to this album felt like a rollercoaster ride with a series of ups and downs. There were just absolutely great tracks that were totally played down by cheap sounding, processed songs. When Bi is finally able to break out of his shell to embrace his music himself without having to rely so heavily on Park Jin Young to hand him his style, I think he will take the world the storm to truly make it Rains World. Until then, we can only hope that his next album will have at least 4 or 5 decent songs.

i agree with the album review that "z-degreest.net" gave. his "new" music style is bland. I pratically slept in the middle of listening to the whole ablum. i don't really like any of the songs. Am I the only one that hates this album style? I love Bi, and was expecting MORE, since he is going to debut in the US soon...

i think the reason why his style is moving away from 'escaping the sun' style and into americanized because that's the style he's going to promote to the amercian market. even JYP on the TRL thing said that Bi's songs will be upbeat dance club songs and less 'reaching to your heart' when he debuts in America. Which sort of makes sense since in America, songs like Escaping the Sun might be too cheesy..i dunno, but america is dominated by the tough image and sex now, an asian guy singing about love, heartbreak while dancing just might not fit in you know? but in Korea love is like the focus lol
here on soompi, we're all asianized lol. we're used to singers singing about corny love, reaching to your soul etc so probably most ppl will prefer Bi's old image, but in America in might not fit in... Like Jang Ri In's Timeless, here it's a big hit, but when i heard it in English sung by Kelly Clarkson, in the setting of America, it does seem too cheesy lol

thats good that you were you honest because some fans.(not saying about anyone here) just "dickryde" their artists even tho they suck or nto as good. the only critism i have on rain that is i would like to see more originality and creavity.. not so much "copying" the mainstream artists as much..

I like the new Bi album. I find most of the songs catchy and I did notice that some of the songs sounded very american, but even then I didn't mind it.
His english has improved but I still can't imagine him comming out in america. But I wish him luck.
