Well...I wasn't going to comment, but if they are considering taking Zidane's award then they can go ahead and consider taking away Italy's World Cup as well. IF and a big IF, Materazzi DID say a racist remark then according to new FIFA rules, the team loses 3 points in the standings, which means a loss.

From FIFA, http://www.fifa.com/en/fairplay/index/0,12...rticleid=116246

The new provision in par. 4 stipulates that if any player, official or spectator behaving in a discriminatory or contemptuous manner can be attributed to a certain team, three points will automatically be deducted from that team for the first offence. In the case of a second offence, six points will be deducted, and after a further offence, the team will be relegated. In the case of matches played without points being awarded, the team in question will be disqualified.

You can't punish someone for one thing then ignore another. I doubt that FIFA will take back the world cup, but personally I don't think they should take back Zidane's Golden Ball either.

That's interesting, I've never read of that before. Thanks for de-lurking to share!

In my opinion, I think we should just hear Zizou and Materazzi's sides (although they're likely to just give opposing views of the incident). FIFA shouldn't have to investigate since they're really not going to find out anything; it's between Zizou and Materazzi. Don't take away the Golden Ball, don't take the World Cup. As soon as Zizou gives his explanation for his head-butt (which will be aired in France in about an hour), they should just try to move on. That is, unless it's really a horrible racist remark or something, but we don't know that.

OMG ZIDANE, ZIDANE OVERLOAD!! i am so glad that so many people give this man the respect he deserves! after reading that article about how he cares sincerely about his family

Jeez that guy is a JERK to say that about Zidane's wife. Everyone who is saying "Zidane should know better"...I think Zidane that to show that he's not going to take any crap about his family..i don't support violence from the field...but there's a time when we just have to say..that's enough

OMG SO GOOD TO SEE SO MANY MAN U AND REAL MADRID FANS! those are my favourite teams!!!!

Am I still the only one who think it was wrong of Zidane to retaliate? sweatingbullets.gif If you have to defend your family's honor, do it AFTER the game, or don't do it at all. Besides I think it would have been more honorable for him NOT to attack Materazzi like that. He should have channeled that agresssion on the field and scored a few goals in retaliation to win the world cup. Yeah....he's human, but being human and having human reaction does not make it right. I still respect him and haven't lost any respect for him because of this - but I just think it's silly to justify an action that should not be justified.

But thye shouldn't take the Golden Ball away from him! That would just be heartbreaking... tears.gif

Yeah, racism is terrible. I have heard stories about it and it's really sad. Cristiano had to deal with it growing up since he had an accent...In fact he threw a chair at a teacher who made fun of his accent and almost got expelled from school because of that phew.gif Sill that's not thhaaattttt bad compared to other stories I have read sad.gif It's just sad that how such a little thing like an accent can provoke racism/violence.

EDIT: I heard something about how Ronaldo doesn't want to be married until he is 30, and how he doesn't really want to have a serious girlfriend at the moment. Oh and appearantly - crazy female fans scare him cause he is shy, haha. Especially when they shout at him in english and he doesn't understand.

Yeah, I think both Materazzi and Zidane did something wrong. Materazzi shouldn't have provoked Zidane, whatever he may have said. And Zidane shouldn't have headbutted Materazzi, FOR THE SAKE OF THE TEAM!

Ronaldo confuses me lol
I guess its partially because he is a Tabloid's favorite dartboard. There always multiple stories on whether he did this, or didn't do this, of he will, or won't, and so on and so on.

Oh, no. I think it was very wrong of him to attack Materazzi (before OR after the game) but it's very much forgiveable. The man lost his cool at that very moment; he must have totally regretted it once he realized what he did. Still, I want to get some actual reason why he did that.

I asked this on the World Cup thread but didn't get a response. Is Cristiano Ronaldo moving to Real? Anyone know?

And since this is a picture thread:

^ I have heard mixed reports. I guess Ronaldo is kind of afraid to play for ManU because of the fans? I have heard that his house was vandalized and crap. But I don't know for sure - I haven't seen anything official.

But I don't think he will move now. His contract doesn't expire until 2010 and the Ckub has stated that they will NOT listen to any offers for Cristiano.

"But he was quoted today as saying that United had "always supported" him throughout his career there.

He said: "Everything is open, if I have to leave Manchester United I don't want to leave on bad terms because it is a club that has contributed to my evolution as a human being and as a professional.

"I have no reason to leave the club, they have always supported me, they always gave me guarantees of being able to evolve as a player.

"There is still nothing concrete. During this week I believe the issue will be resolved."

That's a recent statement from Cristiano.

Gaahhh I think he was whining a bit after the whole Rooney incident, but he's over it now.

My friend told me that Podolski is a white supremacist-he did the nazi salute after he scored. Anyone know more info?>

Well I just Googled it really fast and it looks like maybe it's not. Because he did the "salute" with the left hand and it's supposed to be with the right. And apparently the name Podolski is Polish, so he wouldn't be a Nazi...

QUOTE(Myss Blewm @ Jul 12 2006, 07:08 AM) View Post
Oh my gosh, I hope that Podolski isn't a white supremist! Which reminds me, about a year and a half ago my European history teacher was telling us about how right now the popularity of facists are growing (especially in Austria) again because, like it mentioned in the ESPN special, of the growing population of immigrants and the fear of having their country taken over by the immigrants (which is really stupid to think). She also said that like before/during Hitler's rising, America chooses to ignore it because we see it as if it's not our problem; it's that country's problem (in Hitler's book, "Me Emfank" *or something like that*, he goes into detail about how he wants to take over the world, but the US were just like, "Sure, not our problem"). But if history tells us anything, it's dangerous to ignore the growing popularity of people who think they are the superior race. Ahh, sorry for getting slightly off topic, but I just can't believe this kind stuff is still going on, in a very popular sport too.
Onto something else.....

Do you guys even know what you're saying? Depending on the angle of whatever picture there is of Poldi raising his arm, I HIGHLY doubt he is reenacting it purposely. Why the hell would he to begin with and in Germany of all places where it is illegal and a crime, punishable by imprisonment? He's Polish-born German citizen and I guarantee that he would not only offend Germans and Poles but others who suffered in and after the Nazi era. Just think about that you're all writing and do some research before you even start on such a serious topic! mad.gif I don't find this light-hearted and I don't buy that white supremist crap either unless there is an actual credibale source like oh say, Poldi himself but I think it's far-fetched right now.

Anyway, on with more footballers' pictures...

See, I was thinking that too when I heard about how the players, coaches, and teams couldn't make racist remarks. But, whatever. We just have to sit back and watch how it all plays out. But it'll be way f-ed up if they take the Golden Ball away from Zidane.

Haha, see I'm surprised when he said that he wants to wait ten years before getting married, because like you said, a lot of football players get married when they're young. Ahh, poor kid!! Makes me want to learn Portuguese so I can at least shout something he can understand. LOL Just kidding!!

Hey, I never said that I believed or had any evidence of Poldolski being a white supremist. I just said that I hope the rumor was not true. And I just went into explaination about how facism is growing in Europe. Sorry if I came across that I believed it or whatever.

The head-butt fiasco is getting a little blown out of proportion. No blood was shed, no one died.. There have been MORE serious red cards before.. This is NOT the first time Zidane has snapped.. Materazzi spoke a little nonsense and Zidane simply corrected him. Many of the French have forgiven Zizou about the incident and have moved on with their lives. So, let's make like the French and quit dwelling on the past and pondering why oh why Zidane would do such a thing. It's over and done with!!

Funny parody. SEE? NO ONE CARES ANYMORE!!!!! Quit taking it so seriously, everyone! Let's just appreciate all the good memories Zidane left us. Before the head-butt, of course! wink.gif

Hahaha...I love the picture of him laughing at the ref. and the one where he's just sitting down looking so adorkable!

Sometimes I hate C. Ronaldo...but other times, he just seems too cute!

QUOTE
Zinedine Zidane said on Wednesday that Italian defender Marco Materazzi insulted his mother and his sister during the World Cup final against Italy. The French captain was then sent off after head-butting Materazzi's chest in the second period of extra time of the match.

"He (Materazzi) pronounced very tough words about my mother and my sister. I tried not to listen to him but he kept repeating them," Zidane told in a live interview on French television.

Zidane offered an apology to all children and to all fans for his behaviour but he said he did not regret it.

"This was not something to do. I want to make it clear because it was watched by two billion people and by millions of kids," Zidane said.

"I want to apologise to them but I can't regret what I did because it would mean that he (Materazzi) was right to say what he said."

"I want to ask for forgiveness from all the children who watched that," he said. "There was no excuse for it. I want to be open and honest about it."

Playing the last game of his career, Zinedine was shown a red card, leaving his team mates finish the match without him. France lost on penalties.

Zidane denied Materazzi called him an Islamic "terrorist", as was reported by a Parisian anti-racism group.

Zidane is of Algerian origin, his parents being born in the village of Aguemone in the Kabylie region.

FIFA decided on Tuesday to open a disciplinary investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and Sepp Blatter, the chairman of the soccer's ruling body, hinted that Zidane could be stripped of the tournament's best player award.

It's the latest on the incident..
