i... can't clear =[ ... but i can drop, and smash T_T'

---rainie*
Clears are roughly the same idea as a smash. The main difference would be the point of contact.
Clear POC - directly above your head
Smash POC - in front of you and above your head

Read the play and try to predict where the smash is going first. After a few rallies and seeing the smashing tendencies of your opponent, you should gather sufficient information to make some good guesses of where the smash is going. Also based on your own positioning, you should know where your weak spot is and you should always remember that your opponent will be wanting to exploit that weakness.
After that it's just a matter of hand-eye coordination and timing. Plus depending on your skill level there are many options for countering a smash.

Options:
-return as a drop
-return as a lob
-return as a drive
-and if it's a really crappy smash and you're fast, you could return their smash with a smash

And just some final stuff

-always know where you're directing your shots before the shot even comes
-predict your opponents next 2-3 moves relative to your own
-avoid lifts to your opponent. this way you won't have to deal with smashes at all.

Drops are crucial to success in badminton. It can change up the tempo of the game with one shot and it's surprisingly draining compared to a smash. With smashes a rally could be over pretty fast pending on skill level, same goes for drops, but at a high skill level, drops can last forever and you'll probably run like half a km rallying that thing.

Tips
-keep your racket up -- I'd suggest head of racket on the same level as your own head
-attack the drops early instead of waiting for them to dip below the rim of the net
-aim your drops to the sidelines but don't push your luck by aiming for the lines
-use a firm grip on your racket but a finesse touch when you make contact with the bird
-keep your footing within the T of the court (the service line and the middle line)
-keep one foot on the service line at all times and reach for drops instead of taking your whole body past the service line

Hope all this helps. I've been playing for years and have coached a bit of high school badminton, so hopefully this is just review for some of you.

Lee Yong Dae is not only a handsome player, he's also one of the most talented players i've ever seen !! at the age of 17 he was able to reach the Third spot in the world ranking ! INCREDIBLE !
Jung jae Sung covering the arriere of the court and Lee yong Dae taking on the net ! they can do a lot of damage ! hope to see them shining during the Olympic Year !!!
