Clear POC - directly above your head
Smash POC - in front of you and above your head
After that it's just a matter of hand-eye coordination and timing. Plus depending on your skill level there are many options for countering a smash.
Options:
-return as a drop
-return as a lob
-return as a drive
-and if it's a really crappy smash and you're fast, you could return their smash with a smash
And just some final stuff
-always know where you're directing your shots before the shot even comes
-predict your opponents next 2-3 moves relative to your own
-avoid lifts to your opponent. this way you won't have to deal with smashes at all.
I just need to work on drops. T-T
Tips
-keep your racket up -- I'd suggest head of racket on the same level as your own head
-attack the drops early instead of waiting for them to dip below the rim of the net
-aim your drops to the sidelines but don't push your luck by aiming for the lines
-use a firm grip on your racket but a finesse touch when you make contact with the bird
-keep your footing within the T of the court (the service line and the middle line)
-keep one foot on the service line at all times and reach for drops instead of taking your whole body past the service line
Hope all this helps. I've been playing for years and have coached a bit of high school badminton, so hopefully this is just review for some of you.
