I'm thinking of getting one for my main drive. The idea of SATA and 10k rpm makes me wanna crap in my pants. Anyhow I was wondering exactly how loud and hot they get at their maximum. Can anyone give me a better idea about the raptor? BTW I'm thinking of getting the 74gb one... The 150gb one is way too expensive.

the 150 seems to be quieter then the 74 gigers. Heat shouldnt be an issue just have dont leave it crapped next to a corner wth hole bunch of ide ribbons etc. any generic case should be fine. (with decent airflow)

Unless you have heavy hard disk usage (any app or task that constantly reads/writes large amounts of data), you're not going to perceive much of a difference, if any. Even so, the perceived increase in performance is hardly anything to make you wanna crap in your pants. I have a pair of them myself and I'm not saying they're useless. I'm just saying they're not as exciting as you seem to be about them.. xP

i had a 74 GB in my old system and a 36 GB in my current one...
it generates a fair amount of heat - it can get too hot to touch if you have no airflow in your case, but with a fan next to them they're luke-warm at most
there's a slight increase in speed, it's far from obvious though... nothing to soil yourself over...
