Take it apart -- expected and family and contribution.
basically, it's what's your family should be paying for one year of college. colleges re-caculate it and it should come out to a similar value.
and zero's definitely a good thing. it means your family doesn't have to pay anything (although the loans they give you, you'll have to pay back later).
wait, zero isn't always a good thing. some schools are stingy with financial aid (schools that aren't need-blind), so they might take a less qualified student with EFC 20k over a highly qualified student with a 0 EFC. There are a few schools that do not factor financial aid with admissions, but these are only a few dozen schools out of 4k+ colleges in America.

They somehow factor in your state of residence when they compute.
I'm from NYC, so the cost of living is outrageous here compared to, say, sweet home alabama.
It's not a drastic difference though...I think.
So whatever EFC you got, it's all covered.
