Assuming everything physical is good about it. Speakers are okay, wires not damaged, connected and powered properly...
Then we have to look into drivers... sounds like your sound drives are gone.
Hit start, type devmgmt.msc
see if there is any yellow exclamation points. If yes, then its time to hunt for drivers.

I tried driver reinstallation, other fun diagnostics.
It has the correct drivers (nforce)
Device manager says everything is peachy
DirectX seems to see the sound card but cant use it
Control panel Audio settings yeilds nothing out of the ordinary.
ANYONE ELSE have any ideas for her?
Im out of ideas

Maybe your computer is using the wrong sound device?
My computer would automatically set itself to use something else..
That always happened to me.

how do you mean directx can't use it?
hmm i'm not sure what's been tried so i'll just say stuff even if it's just repeating things...
-do the speakers work when they're connected to other things like mp3 players / cd players?
-do you hear anything if you connect earphones to your computer instead of speakers?
-mute button enabled in your media player or windows volume control or nvmixer?
-is it only with media files, or does it not work with everything?
-in advanced speaker settings (accessible through windows sound properties or nvmixer)... is the speaker configuration set to desktop stereo speakers and hardware acceleration set to max?
-do you have nforce audio selected as default playback device?
-do you have ac97 software installed aswell?
-maybe the soldering on your sound card's audio jacks have come loose?
i dunno, i'm just taking pot shots...

She imed me so I have a pretty good picture of whats occuring..
how do you mean directx can't use it? Dxdiag, you can see the sound card but when you have it do a test, it will fail.

Everything. Sounds like its some nice conflict... like it doesnt have drivers. The device manager shows it as installed and working properly though.
-in advanced speaker settings (accessible through windows sound properties or nvmixer)... is the speaker configuration set to desktop stereo speakers and hardware acceleration set to max?
It shows the nforce audio stuff and its selected correctly.
-do you have nforce audio selected as default playback device?
Defaulted
-do you have ac97 software installed aswell?
I told her to go to nviida to get the sound driver set. Hoping they bundle whatevers needed to use the southbridge
Oh and nice sig boka

umm... ok First off. Is there any special peice of software for her soundcard? Because It could be that her soundcard is in a surround sound mode- or using a digital output, etc..
Make sure that she's in 2-channel mode (stereo) and that her speakers are plugged into the correct audio port...
I had a similar problem before... reformated my computer- everything. Then I realized that my audio software defaulted to surround sound (7.1 surround). Once I set it back to stereo. Everything worked fine. =P
