okay, so... i got my SAT I scores online... and it was the most ugliest thing i've ever seen. so, of course i am going to take the SAT I again. but the thing is that, i don't want my parents to pay $290 per month (2 days per week classes), and i don't know if studying by myself will even help bring up my SAT score higher. so basically, i am STUCK. i do NOT know what to do. oy... so what should i do? do you think i should take the classes or study by myself? the disadvantage about the classes are the different levels of each student, the distraction, and the short amount of time. (only 2 hour per class). the disadvantage for studying yourself at home would be that there won't be someone to help you develop your mistakes. aaaaah >0<;;;

WHY THE HECK IS THE COLLEGE BOARD ONLINE REGISTRATION KEEP ON SHOWING ME MY SCORE PAGE INSTEAD OF THE REGISTRATION PAGE WHEN I CLICK ON THE REGISTER ONLINE BUTTON?!?!?!? O_O????

hmmm well i think that the classes might help you cuz the teachers know what they're doing.....the only way that you can do it successfully yourself i think is if ur MOTIVATED (i need motivation badly >_< ) but maybe u can get with a friend and both of u study together or something. hmmmmmmmmm

my friend, whos going to take the SAT as a sophmore year, has suggested the following to me: it depends on what kind of learner you are. if you can learn with books and without teachers, stick with doing it by urself. if u need a teacher, get a teacher.

ionoe man, it really depends on who u r. i know like 2 ppl, they got a perfect score on the new SATs (they went to the same school, and they're both friends), and they didnt really say much of how they studied. it's pretty amazing how they said they only took "one pratice test" and passed.

see if your school offers free sat prep courses--

i think classes are helpful in teaching you how to take the test but its up to you to study on your own the actual material-- though this may be a given

just borrow different sat books and go over the answers for the questions you got wrong-- i was able to raise my score this way smile.gif

research for free courses. there are community centers etc. that offer free kaplan courses.

i suggest not to do kaplan at your school. one, you're getting ripped off (they are giving you a discount from the regualr kaplan price, $899, by letting you pay $250-$300. but there are places that do the same program FOR FREE). two, you won't be able to focus in class because you're surrounded by schoolmates. for an extra 2-3 hours afterschool. so technically, you're spending 9-10 hours in school everytime you have kaplan. it is a real drag.

depends, if you have the self motivation then do self study.

I don't. I can never sit down for more than 15 minutes with a practice test, so the only way I can practice is by going to SAt classes.

i personally dont think that the stuff you learn frm the class is any different frm what you could read in a prep book. the class i took was a waste of time and money. they taught techniques and gave practice tests but evrything was basically frm the SAT book we had to buy for the class.

most ppl (including myself) have no motivation whatsoever to take the practice tests in its entirety in one sitting, so SAT classes are good for that. but i js do them section by section on diff days.. idk if that helps me but eh, its what i do.

sat classes are PURE MOTIVATION. all they do is make you go through practice tests and go over them, sometimes not even completely and then take anywhere from $200 to $1000. i took one of the cheapest SAT classes around my area and they didn't help ONE BIT. my friends (in fact nobody i know is NOT takign a class) are all taking really expensive kaplan or princeton classes but they say it doesn't really help.

Again SAT classes are for motivation ONLY. if you are able to do practice tests on your own or w/ a friend that would be my suggestion.. that's what i'm doing and i got my score up from a 1650 to a 1800 =)

SAT classes helped my writing a lot though.
I went from a 550 on my Sophmore PSATS to a 800 on my Junior PSATS and a 790 on the real SATS. As for reading I improved about maybe 50sih points? And for math I improved about 50 ish points. But yeah classes basically FORCE you to study for SATS. lol.

i agree, you should study with a friend or two, at least the ones who seriously want to study. my kaplan class...was pointless. i was surrounded by classmates who were more interested in sharing snacks than hearing what the instructor was telling us. and half my friends were asleep!!

the books are helpful though.

I just took a bunch of practice tests from the blue book.
But I did it under actual testing conditions...although I didn't go over the wrong answers after I corrected them.

Oh well lol.

it worked for me, i guess?

Well, I haven't taken mine yet (in April) but I might take it a second time around as a senior in Oct or Nov because by June I'm afraid my brain will have already shut down for summer.

Yea, I think its best to study on your own because in a class you get kids with all different levels and even though you do get test practice, the important thing is the skills. It'll be harder to concentrate on yourself when the lesson plans have to cover the entire class.

But again, like other people said, if you lack motivation then classes may be the best choice.

You need the motivation.

If you lack the motivation, I seriously recommend those crazy SAT prep classes over in that far away land called Korea. But NOT princeton review or kaplan in Korea.

All I remember right now is NDprep and Elite (dont even know if I'm spelling those correctly).

From what I understand, Elite is like SAT boot camp. You're there practically the entire day doing nothing but SAT practice and prep and memorizing words, etc. And they give you tons of homework (memorizing vocab, grammar rules).

I heard lots of famous people's kids go to Elite and NDprep. Cha Bum Keun's son went to NDprep...or something, don't remember anymore.

The tuition is ASDF;LKJASD;LFKJADF. But they garauntee amazing results. Oh, and I think for Elite you have to test in.

I would take classes over in Korea than in the states because they are a lot more strict than over here.

please do not PM me asking me to close threads, etc! i am no longer a mod! ^^ thanks!

^ isn't it stupid to have to test in to a program designed to help people get good scores? what's the point if the students are already going to do well?
i'm so glad i wasn't one of the many people i know whose parents made them go to classes for PSAT and SAT prep when they didn't even need it.
anyway i've heard the classes really don't help much more than what you can get out of a prep book and a few smart friends.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

Because everything in Korea revolves around tests. crazy.gif

My dad had to test into his kindergarten.

But really, I don't know. I'm not even 100% sure if it's true.
