your mouth will probably be sore for the first few days but after that, it's bearable. just remember to eat super soft foods that require minimal chewing~

SPACERS hurt like hell. I think for me (it's been years since I've taken off my braces), spacers didn't hurt the day the ortho put it on, but like the day after. I couldn't close my mouth because then my teeth would touch.
Then every month when you go for your ortho appointment, it hurts depending on what the ortho does. Sometimes he'll change wires to a thicker one and that hurts. Other times he'll cut the wire and that'll hurt. But it only hurts for like 2 days. And the day you actually get your braces, it won't hurt. It's just glue and metal. But the day after you'll feel like i can't read because 1. you're not use to your braces yet and 2. your teeth will have like a sore feeling and you won't be able to eat (I remember eating mushy fries was PAINFUL). But overall, I'm so happy that I got it. straight, beautiful teeth = #1

I still have mine on (actually i just got them on at the end of last year)
Surprisingly i DIDN'T have to get spacers, but my friends have told me that they cried from the pain. :|
When they intially put the brackets on and thread the wire through, it doesn't hurt in the slightest.
ALTHOUGH, you will feel pressure on your teeth about an hour later and this will last (for me) nearly a week. That's when you have to eat liquids because you can't bite down properly. I recommend eating painkillers BEFORE it starts hurting and eat SOLIDS right after you get your braces, my friends orthodontist told her to do that (no one told me ==") But after that week, you get really used to it and don't even notice that they are there.
Changing of the bands DO NOT hurt. You can't even feel it. And choosing different colours are pretty cool. But when they tighten it (apporx. every six weeks) there is only a slight pressure for about an hour (for me) after that but the pressure is nowhere near the same as when you first get them on, it's more a little tugging at your teeth.
So that's basically it.
Keep us posted on how it goes.
