I can't shut down my computer.
It used to just shut down by itself after I click "shut down", but then now I always have to manually turn it off after it says "shutting down windows....."

It's not actually a good idea to pull the plug.
Pulling plug may cause damage to your hardwares as well as losing unsaved datas.

You know what? Backup computer #3 does that to me.

I haven't figured out how to fix it, but I know it has to do with the power management.

It might be in the BIOS, it might be in the Power Options in the control panel. But if I could ever figure it out, its a misconfiguration in the ACPI, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. I believe windows treats it as a driver.

Let it...sit there for a while?

It may just take a long ass time?

My windows takes like 30 seconds to shut down. That's hella long.

Sigged for life.

You are getting me to wonder now, does it turn to a black screen wtih the it is now safe to shut down now or does it get stuck at the colorful windows style windows is now shutting down?

If its the first, then like I said earlier, its the power management.
If its the latter, the getting stuck on a nice windows looking screen, then a program or driver is lagging you. Search google for speed down xp shutdown it has a registry key that you can modify from 20000 to 100.

I used to have the same problem with my old computer and after a while, the motherboard crashed. I had to replace my hard drive. It costed $200 for replacement, labor and parts.
It works wonder afterwards.

yes. its the colorful blue screen of "windows is now shutting down..." and i waited and waited hoping it would shut down. i slept and woke up in the morning, it was STILL "widows is not shutting down". .. .. maybe cuz i deleted a file in windows.. it was from hp and it says terminator something.. and my antivirus said it was an unwanted file or something.

Did you know? Corrupted drivers and anti-virus programs are the main cause of Windows® not shutting down or restarting properly.
steps:-
1. the 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' method if comp stops responding, shut down any lagging programs/driver hangs.

2. if that has no effect the 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' brings up nothing, the next step is a forced comp shut down.

This should only be done as a last resort! You WILL NOT be able to save any open documents! or unsaved data!

3. before hitting the start menu to shut down comp, press 'Ctrl+Alt+Del'
click shut down menu
hold down the ctrl key and click 'Turn Off' with the left mouse button.

sure, but if it shuts down okay if you kill a few programs, then it means there is one program or utility that is causing the computer to hang.

you can also try going to your registry... start run regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control

Click on the Control folder and in the right hand window you will see this key "WaitToKillServiceTimeout". Double click that key and set it to 200.

i googled like crazy and this is what i found in the site @ microsoft.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
