I'm looking to buy a dvd player that supports avi files and so far I've narrowed it down to these two.. I don't know which one to buy..I'm leaning towards the toshiba one because plays dvd-rs . I don't use dvd+rs. However if the Philips one is better I'm willing to start using dvd+rs..

My problem is the description of the Divx ...

PHILIPS
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1077624500910
Plays DVD, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3-CD, MPEG-4, Picture-CD and DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x

TOSHIBA
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1130985150605
Plays DVD, DVD-R/RW, VCD, CD, CD-R/RW, MP3, WMA and JPEG formats; DivX home theater certified allows playback of DivX, AVI and MPEG-4 files

Those 2 descriptions are confusing me..O_O.. Do they mean the same thing?

Thanks for reading this.

Oh and sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.. I wasn't sure to put it in here or troubleshooting...

you posted in the right section. from the description above, seems like the Toshiba offers slightly more in terms of formats.. although the Philips is more specific on the type of divx

If they have openbox models lying around, bring a few divx/xvid movies w/you and test it out.

If this wasn't divx related, I'd take the Toshiba; the + format for dvdr's aren't as good.

I would go higher end... Costco has a Liteon stand alone DVD player that plays divx xvid and burns dvds so you can trash that evil vcr and record shows to DVDs. I think its $130 now, but recently it was down to I think $100 with a coupon...

I find both DVD+/- Rs to be good. My PS2 doesnt seem to care, my Xbox doesn't care either. But my Toshiba DVDrom drive (from 2001) doesn't read DVD+Rs so I avoid the DVD+Rs when I cant do the booktype bitsets beforehand.

MAN! I was going to get the Phillips one...but my DVDs are DVD-R!! Eesh.

The Toshiba one has a bad rating on Amazon...but then, it's the ONLY rating.

I have a Phillips 642 and it works fine. Even though, they said that they can only play DVD+R but i burned all of my movies on DVD-R and it works okay.

I burned all of my k-dramas in .avi format and subtitle in .srt format (as a data DVD, no need to convert anything).

The tip is you need to put them in a same folder and name them the same, for example drama1.avi and drama1.srt (these two need to be in the same folder). Normally, one DVD can fit 6 episodes of drama with subtitle.

Hope this will help ! smile.gif

I used to use the Philip's DVD player to play anime that I burned onto DVD-R, but the subtitles always get cut off. Not sure is it my television or formatting problem.

Well I wish to ask does the dvd player play korean drama with the .srt subtitle files together?

So that means that i can burn it to a data DVD by putting the drama file with the sub together like wat u have said, then get a DVD player that supports Divx, then i should be able to see it in TV with the subs also like wat i see in the pc???

They're written and read differently by the laser.

Doom897, yes. Just have them in the same folders.

lol I should be saying that...

But yeah..Thanks everyone for helping me! I decided to get the Philips one. I went to Best Buy earlier to browse and they listed that it played DVD + AND DVD -. ^___^ I'm going later this week to Walmart to purchase it since it's even cheaper there.

Thanks again everyone and especially for the info about burning dramas..I'm so excited about getting my dvd player now and watch Full House...hehe! ^__^

How much was it at Walmart? When I went to Bestbuy today, it was $54.99, so I just bought it there. I haven't tried it out yet.

I'm excited!

Wow are you serious! When I went there it was the same price as it was online, 60.99$. I guess there must've been a price drop because I just went back to the page and now it's only 54.99$. COOL! lol

At Walmart it was 57$ and something cents.

I'm going to buy it at Best Buy now! hahaha

Thanks chrissejin for pointing that out! happy.gif

Wow craziness! We're buying it at the right time! Thank goodness I didn't go earlier. I kept procrastinating on going to BestBuy because it's far. Thank goodness you didn't get it yet!

YAY!
