The 50 Biggest Dieting Mistakes
By Julia Griggs Havey

Updated: Saturday, May 20, 2006
The health and fitness pros at eDiets can show you how to combine exercise and nutrition to get the best results. This is what you’ve been looking for. You will need to make the commitment, but isn’t it time to finally take care of you? Click here to get started.
How many times have you been driving in a hurry to get to a particular destination, only to find roads blocked, detours set up and your familiar, quick route impassable? Frustrating, isn't it?
If you think about it, weight loss can be the same way. We start on a diet -- usually it is the latest trendy plan -- armed with good intentions and plenty of desire and head down an all-too-familiar path. Then, suddenly, a roadblock! Someone brings doughnuts to work, you forget your healthy lunch at home, or worse -- you have a bad day and throw in the towel -- until tomorrow.
Been there, done that more times than I care to admit. What enabled me to succeed at losing 130 pounds AND keeping it off for more than seven years now? Finding good detours around the inevitable roadblocks!
It is important to know what an unfit life looks like so you can honestly identify some of the things you may be doing that, unbeknownst to you, may be putting roadblocks in the way of your effort to become fit. So here we go. See if you see yourself in any of these...
50 mistakes dieters make:
1. Going on any diet that is NOT a manner of eating they can adhere to for the rest of their lives.
2. Believing they can eat cabbage soup every day for the rest of their lives when beginning that diet!
3. Obsessing over counting calories.
4. Weighing in more than once a week.
5. Not drinking enough water.
6. Drinking sugar-laden drinks, such as lemonade, soft drinks, gourmet coffees, fruity drinks, etc...
7. Eating more bread, pasta and potatoes than proteins, lean meats, fruits and vegetables.
8. Consuming processed foods more often than fresh foods.
9. Taking the benefits away from vegetables and fruits by overcooking them.
10. Having a negative, defeatist attitude.
11. Blaming others for their shortcomings.
12. Being quick to judge.
13. Not having a plan.
14. Not being aware of the nutritional benefits or harm of what they consume.
15. Finishing every last bite even after they are full.
16. Going back for seconds at meals.
17. Eating at all-you-can-eat buffets and getting their money's worth.
18. Skipping breakfast.
19. Starving all day, thinking it’s the only way to lose weight.
20. Bingeing after falling off the wagon and then waiting until tomorrow to get back on track.
21. Thinking they are genetically destined to be fat.
22. Not believing they have the ability to change.
23. Confusing "fat" as a personality trait.
24. Thinking they are unattractive.
25. Not living each day to the fullest. Thinking that will come "when they are thinner."
26. Wasting time.
27. Not finishing tasks they start.
28. Postponing tasks that need attention.
29. Rationalizing.
30. Thinking pills, powders or potions are more powerful than they really are in realizing weight loss.
31. Thinking of exercise as a "must-do" or a chore.
32. Not scheduling exercise as a vital part of their day or week.
33. Indulging in alcohol often.
34. Watching sports rather than participating in sports.
35. Watching television for more than one hour a day.
36. Not giving much time to personal hygiene or appearance.
37. Refusing to read self-improvement materials on a regular basis.
38. Giving up and resigning to being "fat.”
39. Finishing the food off other's plates while doing dishes.
40. Tasting and nibbling on the food while cooking.
41. Baking cookies, pies and cakes more often than at holidays.
42. Always having candy in dishes for guests but eating more of it themselves.
43. Buying unhealthy snack items for the kids but eating it themselves.
44. Not having vegetables and/or fruit with each meal.
45. Serving more carbohydrates than any other food group for meals.
46. Thinking dieting -- not a total lifestyle change -- will garner lasting weight-loss results.
47. Not visualizing themselves actually living a healthy lifestyle.
48. Not taking vitamins and proper supplements.
49. Consuming fast food on a regular basis.
50. Waiting for tomorrow to get started rather than RIGHT NOW!
HOPE THIS HELPED A BIT.

You do a decent amount of exercise, are you getting ANY results? I do about 3-4 miles worth of treadmill and those eclipse things everyday and some situps here and there. My scale hasn't changed dramatically but I do feel a good change in my body.
Yeah, the diet is extremely important. I can exercise as much as I want but if I don't change the amount I eat nothing will change.
Good luck to you. I'm trying to lose about 20 pounds by August. 20 pounds by July, does that mean July 1st ? If so that isn't enough time to lose 20 pounds if you want to do it the healthy way.

my school schedule is pretty tight, so i can't exercise every day like your lucky self.=( if not every day, then at least every other day for me. but it'll be tought this week when i have two of my hardest midterms, i won't be able to workout as much. i did some cardio kickboxing today (YAY!) though to make it up for the gaps later this coming week.
hrmmm, i remember when i first started working out earlier last month...i did feel sore and i did feel like my abs were tighter, etc., but now i feel like i've gained weight and my flabby tummy's back.-.- so i'm trying to figure out WHY?!
yeah, 20 lbs sounds a bit unrealistic, so maybe 15-20 lbs by then. it's july 8th, to be exact.;] anywhos, good luck to you too!!!
sounds like 110 is the magic weight here.

haha im in!! i lost 25 pounds last summer, but then i gained back like 15 during the winter -____- so anyone wanna be my buddy and help me out? lol
maybe you're on what they call a "plateau" -- it's when you still continue work out but don't notice any results. with this, that means your body has already adjusted to the workout so you have to increase them a bit more and it also helps to eat a little less
me too! i want to lose at least 10 lbs before june 20. you think that's possiblE? i'm planning to start going to the gym this afternoon

I know someone who used to be 180 pounds. She then went to Japan and lost 20. Then she came back, discovered this book, and now shes a little below 120, keeping in mind that she's 5'9. So i was amazed and i went out to buy the book, and now i'm starting to change my eating habits according to it's advice. I'm hoping I can change my lifestyle so i never feel guilty about food again.
Good luck everyone!

I think everyone should read "French Women Don't Get Fat" This books provides a lot of healthy advice that would change your way of thinking towards food, weight etc. Just like many of you, I tend to yo-yo diet as well, so i'll gain some, freak out, then work rigorously to lose some. But the book gives you tips on how to change your lifestyle so you can be slim and eat well. They teach you to enjoy and savor your food instead of gobbling it down and feeling guilty after. And they tell you to eat high quality foods, so for example, a piece of really high quality chocolate can satisfy you more fully then like 12 snicker bars can, because all the "cheap" chocolate is filled with ingredients like flour and sugar, skimping out on the real stuff. Theres tons of useful tips and advice in this book, along with many awesome recipes.
