Ahn Hyun-soo failed to keep his dominance over archrival Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States at the final phase of the second meet of the Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Seoul, Sunday. In the men’s 1,000-meter final, Ohno, last year’s overall world no.1 sprinter, clocked 87.452 seconds to outrun China’s Li Jiajun (87.646) and Ahn (87.833) for the gold medal.
The 23-year-old American took another gold in the 3,000-meter race with a record of 5 minutes, 38.465 seconds, past Ahn and his compatriot Lee Ho-suk.
With a last-day rally, Ohno, who was disqualified in the 500-meter and 1,500-meter events, took the first spot in the men's overall classification ahead of Ahn. Both had 68 points but Ohno had the advantage of winning the long-distance event.
Instead, Ahn teamed up with Lee, Song Suk-woo and Seo Ho-jin to lift Korea to the gold medal over China and Canada in the 5,000-meter team competition.
In the women’s competition, Byun Chun-sa took the gold in the 3,000-meter final in 6 minutes, 9.377 seconds, outrunning Tatiana Borodulina of Russia. She also added a silver in the 1,000-meter race while China’s Wang Meng took the gold.
