my computer seems to have crashed-- i get this message when i try to start it up:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows roots>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I've tried Norton GoBack but it isn't able to restore my drive and

i've tried repairing my windows xp installation but it asks for my administration password, i typed in the password i used to log onto my computer but it doesn't work

is there any way i can fix this? without losing all my stuff by reinstalling windows?

thanks so much-- i'm really anxious right now crazy.gif

google system32\hal.dll missing

This web page looks promising. It explains the problem as a damaged or missing boot.ini or hal.dll file.

After you recover from this error, make a floppy boot disk as a backup method of recovery. Google XP floppy boot disk or

good luck
