What would you guys do if you guys were in my case?

Right now I am a sophomore… was planning on majoring in biology. However, I think I finally found the guts to admit to myself that science isn’t my thing after all (I’ve taken chem., o chem., and 1 quarter of bio). So after contemplating for several weeks now… I thought maybe I could try going into business. The thing is, though, admission to declaring business as my major is competitive at my school. And if I want to do business, starting next quarter I need to stop taking science classes so I could get the prereq’s for business admission. So the thing that’s worrying me is if I should take the risk. ‘Cause if I get rejected… I would have wasted 2 quarters, which I could’ve just taken science courses. And since I’ll actually be a junior when I apply to business, I’d be tight in schedule and behind.

I’m really lost.. with where I’m trying to go with my education. I don’t know anymore. What would you guys do? Any input would be great.

I’m probably gonna go talk to a academic counselor sometime soon.. but I still want to hear what my fellow college peers has to say.

Thanks guys

my suggestion is to talk with your academic counselor, and also talk to the people majoring in business...

don't just talk to one person since everyone has their own opinions. what you can do is go around and ask people what they think of the courses, what the job options are... and if you're interested in getting an MBA after grad, what your options are...

is business what you really want to do?
ask yourself why you're going into business?
is there a particular field you're interested in?
do you want to go into advertising, marketing, accounting, or finance? i mean, there's just so many fields..

i've been through the same thing you have, and what i did is i took some time out to see what i was interested in, what i enjoyed doing, and etc...

wish u luck smile.gif

are you going into business just to make money or do you think actually think it's something you'd enjoy doing?

You shoud look up on websites what you can do with a business major, the different fields you could go into, and read up on what skills you'll learn in a particular field, what type of jobs you could get with that field, and try and see if you could imagine yourself enjoying it. I'm sure you could find plenty of helpful links through your college/university's website when you click through to specific departments and fields available to major in at your school.

Well, I've been in a similar situation like you, but a bit different. Business is very competitive at my school as well, and i couldn't get into business directly from high school because I didn't really work all that hard back then, and didn't have a high enough average. I got into my second choice major, and decided to give it a shot to try and transfer into business by my 3rd year. It was my last chance to get in, and I had to fulfill 20 half courses as pre-requsites for business. Now, I'm in my second year, finishing up my last 5 pre-req courses to transfer into business, and I just got my early admission letter last month.
If you're dedicated enough, I'm sure you'll get in smile.gif

hey you and I are in the same boat! except uci doesnt offer a business major (not until next year.. damn) and I'm going to declare psychology as my major next year after I finish the pre-req. I was going to do economics (which is.. somewhat close to business.. not really) but unforuntately my grades for calc 2a and b were too low (thanks to me slacking off). so my academic counsler told me i had no options at uci! isn't that comforting?? smile.gif so i basically screwed myself over because of two calc classes (which i missed the GPA cutoff by a C+/B- woot).

TALK to your academic counsler and see what options you ahve available to you. ALSO consider the fact that MANY MANY MANY people get careers that are totally irrelevant to what they majored in @ college. you should have considered this a bit earlier on, but there is ALWAYS summer school to catch up on missed classes (Granted you will have to pay out the ass for this alternative).

get crackin!

(btw i sign up for classes in 7 hours for next quarter.. so this got me thinkin' 8) )

like you, i figured out pretty late in the game (end of junior year, to be exact) that hardcore science was just not my talent. i needed to graduate, and i could not let all those science classes go to waste. so i talked to my advisor because i just didn't feel like i could face another year of biochem and microbio, and she told me i had just enough science credits under my belt to allow me to graduate with a BS in biopsych, provided i spent the next year doing lots of psych courses. and that worked out really well, because the classes i'm taking are really fun and terrific. and we NEVER talk about fricking protein folding or whatever. i don't know why i didn't think of this earlier. this year has been the most enjoyable i've ever had.

i mean, i'm not suggesting you do that, but it's just to let you know it is possible to change majors and turn things around quickly if you need to do so -- but the sooner you decide definitively, the better off you'll be. you're only a sophomore, so i don't think you'll suffer much lost time if you just decide to drop science now, because honestly, the courses you described sound like prerequisites to a science major. i'd guess you'd have a lot more you need to take if you wish to continue, so don't stick with it if your only motivation is that you've already done those classes.

also -- i notice the under-21 set seems to view this as a death sentence, but i did it, and i'm still here -- you could just get a full-time temporary job and take time off school if you're not sure where you're headed. that way you don't waste tuition taking this course and that while you try to figure things out.

hey i'm a bio major, but i hate o-chem.
but what can you do if you really have a passion of becoming a doctor?
almost all med/pharm/dental/optom schools require science courses as prerequisite requirements.
i'm sure theres ppl who don't really have a strong interest in bio/o-chem but yet want to be doctors.
(well for me chem was not bad, bio is ok, but o-chem sucks....but oh well its only 2 quarters)

theres really no way that one can easily go through something to arrive at what they want.
everyone has to work hard for it!
