I have been looking to get an external hard drive to back up all my stuff. Been doing some research and looks like Western Digital, Seagate are some of the popular choices. Does anyone have any recommendation or experience to share? Thanks in advance.

My experience is they are all about the same. Just get a big one and dont drop it.

Also depending on price, it might be cheaper if you purchased an external enclosure and a hard drive seperately and put it together. That way if you buy a Seagate you even get the nice 5 year warranty they come with.

I got some Iomega thing 250GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache USB 2.0 ..blah blah.. it's decent and it was only $100 after a $50 rebate. I forgot what the warranty is.. but it's still working so I won't worry about it for now.
I am the minority here.

Western Digital Passport. Small, not bulky like other external drives. It doesnt need a additional power connector.

Cons.
Its expensive
a lil bit slower then typical External HD's
small capacity's 40, 60, 80, 120 gig

Well I juz get a Seagate 160GB HDD for Ringgit Malaysia 290 last week, lucky for me my auntie give me an external Box so i dun need to buy one, save some cost there, i think Seagate is good becoz of the 5 years warranty.
I think it best to get the one that have high transfer data rate or u will cry waiting for transfering very large files like Kdrama or movies

then build it myself.. save myself a bit of $$..

Hi, I have WD & seagate and have not had any problems with them, I also have a couple of Maxtor's.
Have not had any problem with the maxtor and I think I got them mainly because I seen them go on sale more often.

I agree with the idea of buying the drive and case separately. You'll save a bunch of money that way.

What I would suggest in addition, however, is that you purchase a firewire card (around $15 - 20) and get a firewire case. Much faster. Especially if you're going to be transfering large files (many Soompi users seem to have massive video files).
