How much memory do you have on your computer?

I currently have 37.2 GB, with about 30.0 GB free of hard drive space and I believe, 128MB of RAM.
I hardly have ANY videos or mp3 files on my hard drive, and keep my computer limited to only programs I frequently use, yet my computer has been lagging like hell.
Should I be looking into purchasing more RAM or HD space for my computer? Also, what do you guys do to free up space on your hard drive, or how do you manage your massive mp3/video collection?
EDIT: I KNOW it's not memory.. I just can't edit the thread title.

If your system is lagging, try defragging every once and a while; virus' / spyware, etc. can also be a reason why your comp slows down.
edit - extra space is always a good thing, HDs are pretty cheap.

What exactly is the standard recommended amount of memory to have on your computer? I mean, to keep it running smoothly and efficiently?

First things first, what programs do you have running in the background? Background programs add alot to the sluggishness of a computer. Second of all, what programs do you use on a daily basis? Some programs are known memory hogs. For example, Itunes is known to take at least 30mb of memory. Alot of times, even more. Firefox can take 100+MB of memory if you don't refresh it often. If you use Microsoft desktop search, you should worry as it takes alot of memory too. To improve the performance of your computer, limit the applications you use to ones that are efficient. Also, try to get rid of background applications. one way to do so is to go to start->run->msconfig->startup-> and start unchecking known memory hogs.

Thanks for the tips. I'm gonna try to rid memory hogs like you suggested..
And yeah, I've noticed that Itunes takes up about 33MB. It's also a huge inconvenience because Itunes & Quicktime go hand in hand; and I do need Itunes in order to update songs on my Ipod, but could care less about Quicktime (which happens to be taking up 67MB!
Also, do you know if clearing temporary internet files has anything to do with it? Or does it not really make a difference? Thanks again!

IIRC, winamp 5.2 supports the Ipod Nativly. Although the interface looks like crap, 5 megs of memory footprint is awesome(with classic interface). If you really like the the Itunes Interface though, don't let my suggestions stop you from using it
When I am referring to memory, I mean SYSTEM RAM. System ram is different from HD space. To see how much system ram a particular program is running, CTRL=ALT=DELETE and go to processes.

Hate to be an even further bother, but I don't have much knowledge with system ram in particular...
Should I get rid of all the background applications that are running? I don't know which ones are actually crucial to my computer's function, and which ones are just unneccesary.

eg: if u have 512MB of RAM in ur pc, then u check ur memory usage in the Windows Task Manager (CTRL=ALT=DELETE t ogo to it), if it exceed it then ur pc will get slower coz it using ur HDD memory as a RAM memory too coz all the memory in ur RAM have been use, & u will see ur CPU usage will be high too coz of the transfering data happening in ur HDD
So it best to have more RAM so that u dun need to worry about it, but viruses or spyware also might coz this prob too

I keep referring to my hard drive as MEMORY. I didn't realize that's really a term used for RAM.
I'll edit that right now.
