Korean Teenager Poised for Figure-Skating Victory
Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na (16) is one double axel closer to the top in the world of figure skating. Kim took the lead in the short program on Tuesday in the 2006 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championship in Ljubljana, Slovenia by beating her 16-year-old Japanese rival Mao Asada. Kim finished her short program with 60.86 points, combining 35.64 points for technical elements and 25.32 points for program components, compared to Asada’s 56.1 points.
Kim got only 48.67 points for her short program in last year's competition but now looks poised to win the championship for the first time, the first Korean to do so. Everything now depends on the free skating, which starts at 2:30 a.m. on Friday.
Kim also won last year’s Junior World Grand Prix, but that took place without Asada, who then competed in the senior group. That means this year’s competition will be the true clincher in deciding whether Kim is the world's top figure skater.
Asada Mao won last year's Junior World Grand Prix final but already moved up to senior status. Kim's coach Kim Se-yeol said her performance “was perfect despite the pain on her right ankle. However, we'll have to wait until the finals as Asada will apparently attempt two fiendishly difficult triple axels in a row in the free skating." Asada was the first female figure skater who successfully landed two triple axels in a program at the Japanese Figure Skating Championship on Dec. 25 last year.
