Not sure how many remember Magnus Norman and his finals in French Open.
It's really nice (for me) to know that he's still active around tennis! biggrin.gif

Also, the best way to hear about Soderling, via his coach.

QUOTE
Soderling is a warrior: Magnus Norman

Thursday, June 4, 2009
By Eric Frosio, translated by Jenny Aitken

After only a few months working together, Magnus Norman has altered Robin Soderling’s mental game beyond recognition. Can the finalist at Roland Garros 2000 help his pupil to succeed where his master failed?

Robin Soderling's journey to the final at Roland Garros is all-too-familiar for a certain person in the Swede’s entourage. Nine years ago, Magnus Norman, who has been coaching the No23 since the turn of the year, had the Roland Garros title at his fingertips. After an intense four-set struggle, the former world No2 was finally defeated on the 11th match point against Gustavo Kuerten, 6-2 6-3 2-6 7-6(6), a defeat which the 33 year old still finds difficult to swallow.

"I often think back to that final,” Norman confides. “Of course I have regrets, because it’s a match I could have won. In almost ten years, I’ve never dared to watch that match on video. It’s just too hard.”

Bad memories

Although this defeat still leaves a bitter taste in his mouth, Magnus nevertheless manages to put a positive spin on it. “I will certainly use my experience to help Robin. Playing in a Grand Slam final is an incredible experience. I am well aware of the errors I made. I was too nervous and didn’t manage to use that stress productively. When Robin goes out on court on Sunday, I know exactly what advice to give him.”

The former champion of the Masters 1000 in Rome in 2000 was forced to put an end to his career at just 28 due to a hip injury, just like Gustavo Kuerten. He then went on to study marketing at a business school in Stockholm before swapping his rackets for a suit and tie and going to work for a company called Catella.

But he was soon tempted him back into the tennis world. Initially he coached Thomas Johansson before accepting to work with Soderling. “This challenge appealed to me more, as I feel more involved with Robin. He’s younger and listens more. I like that!”

It seems that Martina Hingis’ ex-boyfriend knows exactly how to handle the most unpopular man on the tour. In just six months working together, Magnus Norman has managed to transform the irascible giant, not by revolutionising his game, but rather his attitude on court.

Renowned for losing his temper at the blink of an eye, Soderling is now astonishingly calm. The storms in his head have died down, leaving a new, more focused Robin: one who managed to outplay clay-court titans Ferrer, Nadal, Davydenko and Gonzalez.

Mental attitude is primary

“Before starting work with Robin, we looked into what he needed to work on. His mental attitude was an obvious priority. So we talked a lot, discussed things. Before, he was like a teenager on court: now he’s a man. He became a great warrior with a cool head. That’s the thing I’m most proud of.”

Despite never having reached a Grand Slam Round of 16 before, it is clear that Soderling is a changed man out on court. Even if he is not the most sociable man in the changing rooms, his lack of popularity does not worry the Swede in the slightest, as we saw when we met the man himself in our article “One-on-one with Robin Soderling.”

"That’s just what he’s like,” defends Magnus. “He’s often got headphones on and stays in his own bubble. Only those who are really close to him know what he’s really like. My aim is to get the real Robin out on court. If I could do that it would mean more to me than helping him win a Grand Slam.”

One thing is for sure: if Robin Soderling lifts the Coupe des Mousquetaires on Sunday, a great part of that victory will be down to Magnus Norman.

Well at least we know for sure that regardless of who wins tomorrow, it's going to be the biggest story of the tournament. Will Fed tie the GS record or Soderling defy the laws of the universe by taking out Nadal AND Fed for his first GS?

I also giggle hearing people compare Soderling to a young Hewitt....."you love to hate the guy." biggrin.gif

Lastly, as much as it would be nice to see Sveta shed her one slam wonder reputation, this tournament has been Safina's from the start. I think it will be in her hands to win it or lose it tomorrow. Which one will be the lesser headcase? tongue.gif

thanks wendy! ❤

Not watching, and not going to.
Looks like Kuznetsova is going to take it. Darn, this tournament was so Safina's. T_T

Wow....I can FEEL the tension on Safina's face. It's like her worst nightmare coming true. She started off slow, had a chance to win the first set but got tight. Now she's down a set AND a break. Sveta is moving extremely well and just keeping the ball in play, waiting for Safina to overhit. Safina needs to find an answer quick or this is going to be a horrible loss for her considering how well she's been playing.

thanks wendy! ❤

By the looks of things, yes, Kuz is going to take it. WTH? I thought that this was definitely Safina's too. I'm annoyed at the outcome now.

What if tomorrow our guy... mellow.gif
I take it back. We're all gonna party in this thread tomorrow night after the Men's Final!

*is trying to stay optimistic*

CONGRATS TO SVETLANA.

But Safina... T^T I hear she's crying? Apparently she's showing no emotion at all, now.

Done in straight sets 6-4 6-2. Really disappointing to say the least. I'd expect her to be in tears T___T

Anyway, congrats to Kuz. Her first RG title.

Speaking of tears, I don't think I'll be able to handle watching an Oz Open Fed at the presentation tomorrow unless they're tears of joy. So please, Roger, win this title <333

You know I think the answer was already written on the wall from the beginning. Sveta just looked extremely calm and played within herself. She never changed her expression really and in the process did everything well. She knew she had the better suited game on clay and she executed that meticulously. I must say that I'm super impressed with the way she carried herself in the final. Mentally she seemed so strong and that's not something you often hear about Kuzzy.

Safina, on the other hand, oh boy is this going to hurt for awhile. She was unquestionably the favorite coming into the tournament and during the tournament also. I said earlier that this final was for her to either take or give away. Let's face it: she choked BIG time. She looked completely out of sorts and her body language was negative. She tried not to get mad but you could tell everything was getting to her. She looked at her box and coach after almost every shot (often an unforced error) and towards the end of the match, it almost looked as if she was about to cry.

I guess looking on the bright side this will serve as some valuable experience for Safina and I'm sure she'll have more opportunities in the future. Her game translates better on faster courts anyhow so it should only get better for her. Still, this loss is going to sting.

thanks wendy! ❤

I hope RF wins the crown laterrr! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh i'm so excited! I hope Federer will get revenge on soderling since soderling beat nadal, and fed just loves nadal, doesn't he? lol.

Good luck, federerrrr! Go get that title!

Firstly GOOOOO FEDERER!!!!!!!!

Second - I was rooting for Kuznetsova, simply coz her game is one of the most complete on the women's tour. and she deserves to be more than a one slam wonder. But LORDY I felt so bad for Safina when she said to her coach in the second set "why am I such a chicken"?

I thought we were headed to another "it's killing me..." meltdown during the trophy speech.

Incidentally, Sveta happens to be Federer's favourite WTA player. and vice versa. How nice is that?

so hyped for tonights match smile.gif only another 5 hours! i think Federer will win, but not before Soderling gives him a hard time.
look at who he's been up against - Ferrer, Davydenko, Nadal and Gonzalez - thats not an easy line up at all.

we'll either go nuts because Federer didnt win, or nuts because he's won and matched Pete Sampras' 14 grand slams - hope he breaks that record too.

oh and, Safina was a total nervous wreck on court, no idea how she's holding her rank.
