first up, i just want to let you guys know i dont know much about cars, so please teach me and dont tease me k.
i had my exhaust system replaced a few months back, set me back quite a bit. I think i got ripped as well =/
anyway, now i'm wanting to add a air filter kit. But the thing is i'm a little low on cash right now, so i was thinking maybe i can just change the air filter and leave the intake tube sotck.
well i was wondering what differences i can expect by changing just the air filter?
is a heat shield really required? is it really worth installing one?
also is there a dramatic difference in preformance between a stock intake tube and a custom one?
last question, does brand really matter when buying a air filter or do they work relatively the same?
ok thanks in advance.

first, i should ask you what kind of car you have. and which engine you're putting this filter on. different effects on different engines.
by just changing the filter, i'd guess that you won't feel much of a difference. unless of course your car is turbocharged, then i retract my statement
heat shield isn't required, and imo; it's not even worth installing. like, how much "cooler" can the air be if you put in a heatshield. a few degrees if even.
this is how i've always looked at intake piping: it's the same...the difference is probably very minute.
as for the brand of the filter. they all do the same job, but i still have reason to believe that brand DOES matter.
call me a label whore..i don't care

depends ont he car. just putting on a filter probably wont do much if your car is n/a. also depending where the filter is located its probably going to suck in a lot more hot air. so if i were you id just leave it stock for now. hell my fd still has the stock air box, its modified, but its still there

lol, i did that to my car...
...it doesnt sound too bad either. but like someone said, the change is seriously slight, you barely NOTICE the change except for the sound.

depends on car again, if it is a NA low hp engine, you wont notice anything. even an exhaust system honestly
my friend dynoed his brand new S2K, then he slapped on the HKS exhaust system, he lost 1 hp gained 1 torque compared to stock
and his exhaust system was 5-600 0_0

thats why you dont buy cheap crap for the s2k, and you really shouldnt buy a dual exhaust for the s2k. the single exhaust not only weighs less but makes more power.

Q: well i was wondering what differences i can expect by changing just the air filter?
A: it depends on the situation. simply, is your car receiving outside air adequately? replacing the filter will yield more air into the engine, which in turn increases combustion and power... however, if you are not receiving outside air adequately, you will suck only under-the-hood hot air, which MAY increase performance negligibly. the best solution is a cold air intake system which comes with custom piping.
Q: is a heat shield really required? is it really worth installing one?
A: if it's a complete heat shroud to isolate the filter from the hot air, then yes. if it's a small stainless steel sheet then no. those are for brownie points from car show judges.
Q: also is there a dramatic difference in preformance between a stock intake tube and a custom one?
A: generally, i believe so. basic stoichometry.. air + gas = power. increase air and gas for more power. however, check question 1 for specifities.
Q: last question, does brand really matter when buying a air filter or do they work relatively the same?
A: a rule we all go for... "you get what you pay for". there are exceptions, but i would never take the chance in terms of quality. also, some products work differently on cars due to the engineering specs. so, research before purchasing! no refunds without restocking fees!
neener neener... can't catch me~!
