The 80GB is backwards compatible somewhat. I think it's around 80%. Yes, support can be expanded with future patches/upgrades for the 80GB.
If you are thinking of buying one I'd try and find a 60GB. It has the Emotion Engine in it and is backwards compatible 99.9%.

^haha ur parents are like mine, seems i can only get one main system i was thinking of getting a Wii for a couple of games i've not heard of CoD4 bricking any ps3s? seems like everyone is digging CoD4. wat would u compare the mp like? is it anything like CoD1's mp cos that was ok, nothing special and nothing i would want to buy.

Actually im more addicted to the COD 4 multiplayer then COD 2 , it seems more indepth since you can cusomize your player 's attributes to ur liking once you gain enough experience points. Its really addicting.. I play COD4 and TF2 the most

If you plan on dl stuff online to it then you should probably get the 80gb. Also, if you wanna be able to play ps2 games on it then get the 80 because you won't be able to on the 40gb. I got the 80gb for my brother so that he could play ps2 games. I got the 80gb for my brother since he wanted it but I hardly ever see him playing it-_-. Make sure you're not like him.

ill be picking up CoD4 and Assassins Creed next week during black friday, hopefully ill come across a deal for them (CoD4 is $48 at BestBuy)...i plan on picking up Uncharted sometime later, i played the demo and I liked it alot...it reminds me of Tomb Raider, and I really liked TR.

too bad we dont have a Frys around here...

i'm half way through uncharted. its pretty good. the camera angles they use make it feel like a movie. i wish there was more platforming "puzzles"

How is AC? I heard it has some freezing issues so I wasn't too sure about getting it.

I want Ratchet and Clank, Unreal Tournament 3, and Assassin's Creed but yeah that's alot of money for video games...

I borrowed Oblivion: GOTY from a friend and I can't seem to get into it. It's weird I love RPG's but this is not doing it for me. I've heard nothing but good things about this game as well. Maybe it's just me but I really don't like the game.
