I have just learned to convert my avi files to mpeg so that i can burn it into dvd. i used WinAvi to convert the file (4 episodes together). When that was done, I burned it with NeroExpress. Seems like it was working when I watched the DVD. It had all four episodes into one dvd which is good but the subtitles seemed to be too big and it was off the tv screen. First of all, my avi files were hardsubbed by me by using VirtualDub. From then, I used my hardsubbed avi files to convert to MPEG from using WinAvi. What am I doing wrong? How can I make the subtitles not to show big like that? Please help.

Oh! when I used WinAvi I selected MPEG1 as the format. Should I have selected MPEG2? What's the difference between MPEG1 and MPEG2?

Install directvobsub to skip directly to WinAVI. It can take the subtitle files and convert it embedded with the video directly to whatever format you need.
Otherwise its faster to start a frameserver in Vdub to serve the subtitles.

For Virtual Dub, you have to set the font settings of the subtitles in the filters menu where you loaded the subtitle file in the first place. You might need to get Subtitle Workshop if the subtitle doesn't like to be manipulated with one filter or another. I recall there were two and I know one allows for more customizaiton than the other.
For directvobsub, (if you use winavi) rightclick the arrow at the bottom corner of your computer and go to properties one of the tabs will let you adjust the subtitle font and size settings. In additon to position.

In terms of format, you actually have to set it to DVD to make it play properly. Mpeg 1 is basically vcd. Mpeg 2 is basically SVCD or DVD, but the resolution, bitrate, and audio has to match DVD standards for it to play properly in a DVD player. If I recall correctly, you could set the target output size of the DVD file to be something like a fourth of a DVD so you could combine the files and get it to work together on one dvd... unfortunately I have not tried that as I prefer to work with vcds.

Hopefully that helps a litle.

Thanks a lot. I'm a lot more clearer now. I will try the new ways you said. This is my first time trying to convert and burn into dvd.

Good job on getting it to work though! The first time I tried to do subtitles it took me many many tries... lots of interpretation of guides and finding my files were weird formats and all that.
~_~ and lots of converted movies that didn't show subtitles for some odd reason...

I have installed directvobsub. I converted 4 episodes at a time with the avi file and the srt files(which means 8 files)but everytime at the end of each episode, a message that says can't convert file(shows the episode srt file). system may not have the decoder(can't really remember)something to do with codec. and then I would have to click okay for it to continue to next episode (it'll continue converting). I did it all the way to the 4th episode. These were done in DVD format. When it was done I noticed that it was split into 2 files. Tried to burn both files but said needed double layer disc. So I burn them separately and when I watched it noticed that 1 disc has epi 1,2 and a little bit of 3 (then freezes). 2nd disc continues 3 and 4. Think disc only holds up to 4.2 g file(that's how big the 1st disc is) I burned them with Nero Burning Rom. By the way subtitle shows still off sometimes when it's too broad. Now I'm converting 4 hardsubbed files. Hopefully it doesn't ask anything to click okay between each episode since there's no srt files. I may have to reduce it to lesser files to fit the dvd. Anyway, thanks so much AWDARK. You were a lot of help. I'll just have to experiment until I get it to be perfect now that I know what works and what doesn't work. Anymore help would be greatly appreciated.

I also tried with WinAvi to hard sub and convert but i lose quality as in the pictures. when the objects in the movie move there are a blurness. the sound and the actual pic don't match also. I used virtual dub mod to put the trunt he sub to hardsub and burn with nero express. my questions is when i use nero to burn the avi file to dvd it can only hold 4-5 chapter and when i convert to mpeg and burn dvd with tmpec author it hold 6 chapter. Is there any way i can use nero to hold more chapter? is it neccessay to convert and if i use winavi will i lose quality?

when i use virtual dub mod, there are certain files i can load but it play fine. there are an error or they say its a corrupted file and something about code 100. anyone fimilar with this error.

if you can please email me or msn message me at wenipoo@hotmail.com
