i watched this Punk Doco on tv a few weeks ago adn was pretty interested in the rise and fall of the genre that is punk. i thought The Clash were an alright band, but havent' heard a lot of their stuff. though, when you associate music with punk, the first thing that comes to my head is Sex Pistols!

thats kinda depressing, knowing bands like that are being compared with classics like the Sex pistols and The Clash. i mean really, its great music. i wish it would come back

it would've been so awesome to experience the original 70s punk period though. however i highly doubt that there will be another Pistols in the near distant future...!

yea, its pretty annoying........gets on my nerves even more that they call themselves 'punk'. its just bringing the wrong message of punk music, the REAL music.
too true, i mean i have no problem with people liking green day and such, but PLEASE dont NOT call them punk, its pethatic. man i wish they would play this stuff more often, i hear London Calling ever now and then on the radio, but i wish they 'de play more

how brilliant were they !
i think it's sad how people like lee harding and simple plan and good charlotte are getting called punk . it's the most idiotic thing . i just hate that people think they're hardcore just because they're running around wearing band tees and badges and black converses .. even my dad thinks they're lame . he saw lee harding (from australian idol) on tv and asked "who's this idiot ?" . when i told him people were calling him punk , he scoffed and showed me a picture of sid vicious and said "this is punk . that guy's pop with piercings" . haha~ when my dad thinks someone's a joke , i really wonder about why other people think they're so awesome .
i mean , how do people go likening this

to this
there's this girl i know and she's okay .
there's this guy as well , he's much the same .

that picture shows the raw energy of the 70s and what it was really like. Punk was all about rebellion and being yourself. however, now you have "so-called" pop/punk people or whatever they call them singing about weird things like 'wasabi'. i think the 21st century has altered a lot of things like technology, lifestyle, etc. but i think people should pay more attention to what they are doing to the music scene.

i definitely agree that people should think more about the (often heinously awful) impact they're having on music right now .
also , if lee harding disappeared off the face of the earth it would be a much better place .
anyway o_o;; i'll leave the man alone now . sorry for hijacking the thread . eek .
and now back again to the proper music ....
there's this girl i know and she's okay .

I'm not much of a punk fan but I do respect the music of the Sex Pistols for defining an era in music and influencing the style of countless artists.
Still, I never really got into the whole Sid Vicious phenomenon. It annoys me seeing emo kids today donning shirts with his pretty mug on them and not knowing a damn thing about him, save for maybe the fact that he was in the Sex Pistols. Sid couldn't sing, at least not too well and definitely not as well as the legendary Rotten, and it's well-known that he couldn't play the bass-guitar that he strummed so vigorously at gigs; the fact that it was the only unplugged electrical instrument out of the whole screaming ensemble gave it away to musicians at least. Sid was a pretty front man, a poster child with all the acessories and attitude but in my opinion, nothing more. It's just one of those phenomenons I could never bring myself to embrace. Basically it comes down to this:
If Rotten is the voice of punk, then Vicious is the look
But at any rate, Good Charlotte and the likes can't hold a candle to them, and from the way things are going, more likely than not: Never.

i know of punk bands in general (no thanks to that interesting doco!) but i haven't actually been properly introduced to the British Punk scene. [you're probably thinking what the hell i'm doing in ths thread, but it can't hurt to learn more about this genre!
