What are your plans and worries?

I'm worried about finding a suitable job. It's tough. They say it takes around 5 years or 3 job switches before you find one you are comfortable with. Also, there is the issue of living in another city. If you want to move to another city, you need to find a job there first and that can be tough since employers prefer to hire those who already live in the city.

There is also the social life factor. Most of my university friends are gonna go there separate ways. Some are moving back to their own cities or country. They say its tough finding friends amongst coworkers because of the work environment.

The hardest part is still finding a job you like and are suitable for. Unless you are very lucky, it will take years before you find one that you can call your career. But I guess everyone has to start somewhere. It's better to start now than later.

I would also like to travel. Since I'm single, if I find a job, I could use the vacation time to go on a trip somewhere.

I'm not too sure how this is all going to work out because I've only begun applying for jobs. I've applied mainly through employment agencies and also at a few notable companies. Hopefully I'll get some interviews.

Please share your thoughts. smile.gif

thats cool. you're korean, correct? I heard from a friend (he's white) that it is a bit difficult for chinese and koreans to get accepted into the JET thing. but there are some who made it as well.

i'm not korean, or asian at all.

mmm...i don't know if it's difficult for asians to get into JET. there's definately asian-americans that are on JET. actually i think they are trying to get more minorities into JET since it's mostly been white guys...tho white ppl are in demand in japan for teaching english...

if those chinese/koreans are not US citizens then it would be hard...
but if they are then it should be no problem.

cuz there's also JET in china and korea. i totally told my korean friend to sign up because her japanese is really good, but i guess she got a job in korea already... sleep.gif

I'm taking similar path to little_mixed_girl. I want to teach in Korea for a couple years and come back to get my masters. I want to be an Asian Studies Professor at a university =)

Since I am getting loans for my tuition and etc .. i am scared that I won't get a job after I graduate. When that 6 month grace period ends, I need to pay off those loans .. and without a job ... that'd be a scary position

does that mean you gotta learn chinese? or do you not have to? there's this vietnamese asian studies prof at my uni and he said he had to learn chinese and japanese. it took him like 8 years to become fluent in both. he said chinese was the hardest. sweatingbullets.gif

I would just recommend passing out as many resumes as possible.

I plan on taking a year off to either work for an NGO or Peace Corps. Then I'm going to grad school. But if my freelancing gig turns out to work out suitably, then maybe I'll just stick to that.

Who knows? Don't rush to plan out the next twenty years of your life. It'll never work out the way you plan anyway.
