My review of the Mazdaspeed6

First thing I've noticed was that 1st gear and 3rd gear are so close that I stalled at least 5 times in 10 minutes because I didn't know the difference until I stalled. The shifting, from a passengers point of view, is still ehh. I'd say the RSX-S is the smoothest car I've ever sat in as a passenger. Most of us know that the driver is usually unaware how the backlash feels because we are the drivers and concentrate on other things. The parking brake was also awkward. I pulled a little and it wouldn't bulge up anymore. I guess it's fully engaged just a few clicks away.
THE CLUTCH is my worst annoyance. Even when I was in the correct gear, I couldn't tell how much I should tap the gas. I then tried to find the catch point and it was okay, but that took me 5 seconds alone. The clutch just snaps back really fast. Even my friend's brother, who has been driving manual for years, had trouble and started in 3rd. (3rd and 1st being too close to each other) Going into reverse was kind of weird, since I haven't tried it on a 6 spd. car. Push down and push in reverse. It takes more energy than my 5 spd. Integra.
The good things about the ride? It is a 270 hp awd car. It was fast, but I didn't take it above 4k since it was still in brake-in period. Since I am clueless about turbos, I don't know about what it feels like when it spools and all that.
What sucked was that once I got into my car to drive, my body was in my car, but my foot was in the Mazda. I keep letting go the clutch and gassing as if I were in his car. This made me over rev a lot. At first when I was trying to reverse, I thought I was still in neutral. Found out the hard way I wasn't. I gassed too early.
My verdict... this car isn't for some person who wants a cruiser. I found the car hard to drive and the seating position horrible. This car is for someone who can make the most of the turbo!
Okay this is my first real review. It is lame... but oh well.

They said the clutch was very heavy and the catch point was very small.

I went to the Mazda forums and found out that a lot of people complained about the clutch.
They said the clutch was very heavy and the catch point was very small.
Its just a matter of getting used to the car. Once you drive it for awhile, its like second nature.
i believe the Rx8 had the same feel as the Mazdaspeed 6 in terms of clutch engagement. clutch is suppose to be heavy for performance vehicles.
work that leg out!
if its not his, why should he have to worry about it? hahaha thats my logic. prolly not fair to his friend but....
selfish and inconsiderate logic

My friend came over to my house at 12:30 am so I could test drive his 2 week old car.

wtf. are you sure? so 2nd and 4th gear should be just as close as as 1 to 3? then why haven't you stalled at 2 and 4? there is NO WAY a transmission manufacturer would build a gearbox which requires extra movement from a straight pull from 1-2, or 3-4. simply stating... the gates are probably really close to each other, a la acura nsx. you are used to wider gated gearboxes.

every gearbox is not identical to another. therefore, in order to be a truly adept to any gearbox, you must learn to drive stick on every car on the planet. have you driven a v-dub beetle manual? the clutch throw is longer than my height and the catch point is hard to deduce, just like that 6.

turbos spools the fastest at wot.

your review is a good glimpse of what the car is. doesn't look like it is equipped with the average 'japanese' gearbox... i am pretty sure if any driver is capable of taming that tranny, you will have second thoughts about the backlash and a sissy/comfortable ride.
neener neener... can't catch me~!

You should try the car out yourself. If you don't really keep your mind to it, I'm sure you'll go into 3rd instead of 1st by accident.
