it should be a rather wide theme but not too wide though.

i'd write about the nature of insanity... is hamlet really insane, or is he acting???

look at passages such as when he talks to rosencranz and guildenstern (umm spelling?)... right after the play scene and they tell him to go see his mother....

or look at the passage where he's with his mother, he kills polonius and then he sees the ghost father his mother doesn't see...

hope that helps a lil! happy.gif

uhm for themes...i think u can write an essay bout thought to action, how in his soliloquys, he's always talking about killing cladius n blah blah or...corruption and death, how they say something is rotten in the state of denmark, apperance vs. reality like if hamlet really is insane or not. u can tell when he's acting by the way he talks. u have to look at the verse n prose. if the text is justified then he's acting mad. if the text is left alignned then he's being normal. ok maybe im just rambling cuz its 230 am =)
go on and say it
u need me like a bad habit

I didn't even read this, and I managed to pull off B on the test. Lol--
All I can tell you is that it's a story about revenge. Haha!!

Watch the movie instead of reading the book. Or read along with the movie. I heard it works. smile.gif

I could have uploaded an essay, but my AP teacher took it back after I got my grade. But here's the formula we used in case you want to just see it. It applies primarily to Hamlet himself:

Formula for Aristotelian Tragedy
  • Nobility
  • Heroism
  • Character Flaw
  • Character Resolution

800 words will b easy... r u saying it'd b hard to keep it within 800 words or make it so that it reaches 800 words?

i'd pick a key passage and write about that... but remember to place the passage in the correct area of the book... show how it's an example of hamlet's insanity... or not insanity... show both... hamlet's a complex character.... u can write so much about it!

I read Hamlet this year for AP Lit...for my essay, I wrote about how the women in the novel are influenced wholly by men and can live only if they are subject to oppression. Sounds weird, but it turned out quite well. I got an A, at least smile.gif

two themes i came up with:
1. the repeating appearances of the image of rot [1. "something is rotten in the state of denmark" 2. hamlet sr's rotting flesh after poisoning there's more but i don't have the play with me at the moment]
2. is hamlet really crazy? [imo way overdone]

sexism.. its a big part of the play. women are portrayed as weak and vulnerable to to men. opheila is also blamed by hamlet, and he states how women make men crazy... or something like that.

also ophelias death... accident or suicide? did she commit suicide due to her situation or did her madness lead her to an accidental death... i actually wrote an essay on this topic
