Well, I'm not sure what you have or haven't read. Have you tried Neil Gaiman's stuff? If you're not into graphic novels (his Sandman series), I suggest American Gods, Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett) and Neverwhere.
I also like Arturo Prez-Reverte's works - he does mystery and intrigue very well. Try The Dumas Club, The Flanders Panel and The Seville Communion.
Milan Kundera is also worth reading: The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Immortality.

LOL, yes it is.
Couple more recommendations:
Kazuo Ishiguro - A Pale View of the Hills, An Artist of the Floating World. I feel these two don't always get a lot of attention since people are more familiar with Ishiguro's Remains of the Day, but they're both excellent.
Umberto Eco - Il Nome della Rosa (The Name of the Rose). A little tedious in the beginning, but a very rewarding read if you manage to persevere.

im not done yet, but once i finish typing up this post and when im done eating(just came home from school), im going to finish it. heck, im a highschool student, but i really COULD NOT put the book down. i stayed up until 4:30 am last night(or morning..) until my brain gave up and i fell asleep with the book. haha. i had an hour of sleep.
but this book is so original. i don't stumble upon these books often...
but I LOVE THIS BOOK =)
im in love with the plot...
especially now, im going through alot with my family, and its a good , good read.
My teacher saw me sneaking to read it today in class, first, she yelled at me, then saw the title, haha, and she said "thats a really great book."
she forgot to yell at me again.( she usually does
i highly recommend:
The Lovely Bones.

currently halfway through the spirit catches you and you fall down by anne fadiman. it's one of those books every college student reads at some point, but i never got to it myself until now. my family are vaguely interested in hmong culture because basically none of us had ever heard of hmong people until maybe like two years ago, so i think i'm going to tell them about it.

It's a really thick book. Some of the chapters were boring.
